Sincere condolences to Elizabeth and the extended family on the sad passing of John.
Great memories of his joining us in the ESB Personnel function in the 1970,s. He really was a force of nature. Had great debates on the advantages of the twin carbs in the Alfa Romeo that he drove. What an amazing career he had. May he rest in peace.

May I offer my deepest sympathy to Elizabeth and the family on the loss of John. I met John in Trinity's Buttery when he was pursuing his Masters in UCD. I recall, with great fondness, the glint in his eye as he held court with a group of less mature students and provoked them into thought and discussion. I saw him rarely after that - mainly through our mutual friend JW Murphy - but am happy to know that DCU had the benefit of his wit and wisdom. May he rest in peace.
Awfully sorry to learn the news of John's passing - he was always such warm and genial company: a great scholar and a wonderful friend. He'll be much missed in DCU, in the RDS and, of course, at home. Deepest condolences on your sad loss.
Dear Elizabeth and family, sending sincere and heartfelt condolences to you all on the death of John. He was a one off. It was a privilege to have him as a colleague in DCU and follow in his footsteps as a President of the Irish Fulbright Alumni Association. I will be thinking of you all on the occasion of his memorial tomorrow. RIP John.
We are all so sorry here, on the passing of your Dad. We will miss his cheeky smile, the glint in eye and the quick whit of his repitoir.

-the fun and great times in DCU ,particularly in the early years.
-meetings in John's office which were always well attended because he always ensured" brewed coffee"!.
-and not to mention the the "old/younger retirees" lunches he organized in the Yacht club which were brilliant fun.

Dear Elizabeth and family,
I am very sorry to learn of John's death. He was extremely fortunate to have you to support him so unsparingly at home in his last years as his mobility lessened.
John was an acute and witty observer of human behaviour, not excluding his own and that of his colleagues. By his own account he learned far more from running a cinema, and from living hand to mouth in Spain, than from his first unsatisfactory foray into university life as a student in UCD. He always spoke about people as individuals rather than as types or cohorts, be they his childhood friends, his parents, his children, his lecturers, his Spanish acquaintances, or his ESB and DCU colleagues.
As an academic, he focussed on the impact of institutional design, processes and cultures upon individuals. His groundbreaking study of Nobel laureates highlighted the importance of organisational flexibility, intellectual autonomy and personal curiosity in enabling meaningful discovery. This striking finding challenges the dirigiste, mechanistic assumptions underpinning most funded research at institutional, state and EU levels.
We shall all miss him.

Dear Elizabeth and family, so sorry to hear of John’s passing. I am overseas at the moment and will not be able to attend his funeral. I have very fond memories of John, particularly as he regaled us all in conversations in the DCU staff room at lunchtime. He has a great sense of humour and a wicked laugh.
