Professor Gene (Charles Eugene) Connolly

Worked with Professor Gene Connolly on a Breast cancer research project in the 70s as a young Medical Scientist. A great teacher and such a kind person. RIP.

I was very saddened to hear this news. My abiding memory of Gene was when Mum and I attended the wedding of a former student of his in Malaysia where we had a wonderful week, so many laughs with himself and Patricia. He was always so kind, professional and good humoured in the workplace and forward thinking when it came to innovation and new scientific methods in the Histo/Cytopathology department. His support meant a lot as a work colleague and a mentor to both medical and scientific staff. I am forever grateful to have had the privilege of working alongside him.

He was a kind and good man, always generous with his time and a great teacher in pathology. He will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by a generation of Galway medical graduates.

Dear Patricia and family, I was profoundly saddened to learn of Gene’s passing and want to extend my deepest sympathies to you all. From inspiring me to be a pathologist, assisting me in applying for residency training in the US, his sustained interest in my career development, and his counsel and guidance down the years, I am forever indebted to him for his professional mentorship and the gift of his friendship for the past 38 years.

As outstanding a pathologist as he was, he was an even greater person. I will miss his warm welcome, innate intellectual curiosity, positive outlook and genuine interest in/concern for my professional and personal wellbeing.

A very talented pathologist and teacher, a trusted career mentor, a cherished colleague, a positive person in every sense, and a sincere friend to so many, Gene will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by those who were fortunate to have known him. May he rest in peace.

Gene was a truly lovely man and very kind to my mother Maura when she was ill. He phoned up Northwick Park Hospital in the Uk re her treatment. He was very kind to my father Frank Boland too. He was great company and very interesting to talk to. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I am so sorry for your loss.
