Professor Paul McKevitt

the words can not express my sorrow and sadness to loose such a kind and lovely friend like Paul. I had a lot of good memories with him during our studies at New Mexico, we had traveled together and share so many activities and all of that is still in my mind and my heart. Few weeks ago, we had plans to perform academic activities between our institutions, and I was suppose to host him at my HE institution to share expertise in AI next February, and I was looking forward to see him, I feel so sad for his loss and not being able to see him. May god bless his sole and my sincere condolences to his lovely family.

No words can describe the loss of Paul. He was the epitome of sizzling joy and brilliance. I met Paul in New Mexico State University late 80s as he was the pioneer then in AI. I later visited with him and his family 2006 and have always yearned with immense nostalgia to those times in Ireland. I feel now the devastation as i had once wondered how sad life would be without ever so joyful Paul....he certainly has left us with great memories and Paul will always be nearby in our hearts.....peace dear beloved friend Paul.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Professor Paul McKevitt.

I got to know Paul as a generous person, a great thinker and storyteller with a great sense of humour. We met each other in Germany in autumn 2022 and we had a great talk together with two colleagues for two hours. We both were sharing our „flame of learning“ as Peadar has named it in his service speech. The lunch time was filled with talk about science and Irish music and it was way too short for us. We planned his visit to my home in November this year and we were looking forward to continuing our intensive conversation and listening to Irish music at the fireplace. Now, there is an empty spot.

Many thanks to his sister Tara of sharing information with me about this Condolence Book and the recording of the service. Watching and hearing the service and talking to Tara helped me to find peace in these troubled times.

My deepest condolences go to his family members on this sad and early passing. I will always think fondly of and remember Paul.

I am so very sad to hear of Professor McKevitt's passing. Paul went above and beyond in his support of me during an extremely stressful time in my academic life while at Ulster - his empathy and kindness were key to my being able to go on and finish my PhD. He was an absolute gentleman - so generous, and a real listener with a great sense of humour.

Having spent 5 years as classmates at CCS, in a great learning atmosphere, I could easily see his appetite for learning and his choice of career in academia. When we would meet at a school reunion or for a drink at the local, I was always amazed at his depth and breadth of knowledge and his achievements. After the COVID years I was really looking forward to the next get-together.

Dear Rose and Peadar,

We're so sad that Paul has passed away. He was a much beloved and inspiring colleague that I always enjoyed meeting.

We first met at the Second International Workshop on User Modeling in Hawaii (!), and started an exchange of ideas that has led to many joint activities over the years, such as participating in various PhD defences that we supervised, and research visits in both directions. We had lots of jolly good times.

Paul and I sometimes emailed each other late in the evening, just to tell that a big ship was passing or that it started to snow.

On one occasion when Annette and I were in Londonderry it happened to be Saint Patrick's day. We visited your home, Rose, and the five of us together watched the parade in Belfast on TV. Perhaps you remember.

We will all miss Paul terribly.

I met Prof. Paul McKevitt in early 2017 for the first time when he gave a talk on the topic of Imagineering Creative Technologies. His talk captured the attention of several students, and I remember many students actively engaging with the talk and enjoying it, particularly due to Paul's sense of humour.
My supervisory panel had decided to invite Paul for my PhD viva as an external examiner, and I feel lucky to have had him on the viva panel for two reasons: 1) His thorough review of my thesis and the valuable comments he provided undoubtedly enhanced the professionalism of my PhD thesis, and 2) His very calming and relaxing attitude significantly reduced the stress and pressure during the PhD viva session.

He will always be remembered by me, and even by my mother and siblings who were following the news of my PhD viva day and are now saddened by Paul's passing.

My sincere condolences to the McKevitt family on the passing of Paul. He was a warm generous giving man, a scholar of the utmost integrity, and a wonderful friend.

So very shocked and saddened to hear of Paul's passing. He was such a kind and wonderful, gentle, man. An immense intellect and innovative thinker, but also full of humility and humour, and always friendly and compassionate. My heart goes out to all those who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear of Paul's sudden passing. Paul and I were in the same class in Carn and also in UCD Computer Science 1881-1985. We have kept in touch. Just last week Paul shared the full list of names of our 5A class of 1981 from the picture in Inis Dúinn.

Exactly 10 years ago this month I spent a week with Paul when he organized the 2013 Loebner Prize contest in Derry. He let me drive his car : my first time driving in Europe, first time driving on the left, and first time driving with stick shift on my left hand. And we drove in 2 countries.

I have very fond memories of a kind man who will be sorely missed.

My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
