Sincere condolences on your loss, Edel. I remember Raghnall as a man of great intellect, with a warm, friendly nature and a great sense of humour. May he rest in peace
Dear Edel, sincere and heartfelt condolences to you, your children and the wider O Floinn family. I was so sad to hear of Raghnall’s passing.
Raghnall was a gentleman of honour and learning and I consider it a privilege to have known him. Wishing you comfort and peace as you grieve his loss.
Edel, Sorcha, Muiris, and relatives,
Sincerest condolences - he was an enduring contact in NMI, no matter what the problem. There must have been over six hundred in the church for his mass, a tribute indeed to a great and always friendly scholar.
On 25th August, 1981, not long after I had told Raghnall and NMI of the Annagh Later Bronze Age pin with rings on the stem, he wrote to me telling me that he found a drawing of the Knockglass LBA pin with a ring on the stem in Joseph C. Walker's An Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish. Soon after Dr. Niamh Whitfield also found it in the Ouseley Commonplace Book.
Raghnall was not just all Vikings and Early Medieval and High Medieval quality metalwork.
It was he who came to Annagh bog to get posession of the Annagh hoard for us all.
With Trillick and Annagh, Knockglass are the only three such proven arrangements of pin with rings on the stem.
May Raghnall direct us from above as to where the Knockglass pair are now!!
Comhbhrón ó chroí ó mhuintir Uí Fhlaithbheartaigh ar bhás Raghnaill. Is cuimhin liom go cneasta é, go háirithe as ucht a chineáltais, a shár-léinn agus a chumas ghrinn. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis caomh. D’fhág sé a rian. Rónán agus Niamh Ó Flaithbheartaigh.
Edel, I was so sorry to hear the very sad news of Raghnall's death. Its almost 40 years since I worked with him on Derrynaflan, but the memories of those times live on as does his infectious enthusiasm, good humour and wide ranging knowledge. He will be sorely missed, condolences to you all and the extended O'Floinn family.
Sincere sympathy to all the ÓFloinn family on the passing of Raghnall.
May he rest in peace.
It is with great sadness that I learn of Raghnall's passing. Please accept my sincere commiserations. May his memory be written in the Book of Life, and in the hearts of those who love him.

Edel, Sorcha agus Muiris,

Nach géar é bhúr sceol!

Comhbhrón ó chroí.
My condolences to Edel and the whole family at this time, Raghnall was always so kind to us in the museum
Deepest sympathy to Aoife & the O'Floinn family on Raghnall’s sad passing. May he rest in peace.
Dear Edel
My deepest sympathy to you and your family on such a loss.
Raghnall gave me unstinting support, critique and an amazing sounding board while working on the pottery from the NMI excavations. He could locate any piece of pottery anywhere in the Crypt and gave me a wonderful tour of curiosities that I should know about.
His delight when I phoned from the basement in Merrion Row to tell him I had located the handle to a special jug, the speed at which he ran around the corner from Kildare Street and our happy jig and shouts of delight as the piece came together.
While he did not agree with my interpretation of a Leinster Cooking Ware vessel in a recent paper, at the October Medieval Dublin meeting, he agreed, with a twinkle in his eye, to always be friends.
I am so sorry and shocked tonight to learn of Raghnall's passing. My deepest sympathy to you Edel and to your children and all the family. A light has gone out, one I know you will sorely miss. He was a lovely man. May he rest in peace.
Cómhbhrón ó chroí do mhuintir Raghnall, ón foireann ag Músaem Cathrach na Gaillimhe. Suaimhneas sioraí do.
Raghnall may you R.I.P
LOVE HUGS PRAYERS TO ALL THE FAMILY.

Sincere condolences to Edel, Muiris and Sorcha on the passing of Raghnall. He was a great colleague and a shinning example to us all in NMI. RIP Raghnall.
Edel,
We are so sorry to hear of Raghnall's passing.
A true scholar who carried his immense learning lightly, I know that you, Sorcha and Muiris must feel that a shining light has been extinguished prematurely from your lives.
Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
Orla, Gerry (McNamara) Tommy, Brighid, Aonghus and Rioghnach (Gavin)
and
Niamh and Enda Hardiman
Raghnall was an incredible scholar and archaeologist, his legacy cannot be overstated. But he was also the kindest and most generous man. One of a kind. Our thoughts are with Edel, Muiris and Sorcha at this most difficult time.
My deepest condolences to you, Edel, and Sorcha & Muiris, on your bereavement. Raghnall was an outstanding scholar and a true gentleman. As is said traditionally in Corca Dhuibhne of those who depart this world for the next during Advent and Christmas, ‘ fuair sé Cuireadh na Nollaig’. May you all find comfort in your great memories of him, as well as in the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam uasal, agus leaba i measc na naoimh!
Sincerest condolences to you Edel.
To Niamh and family, our deepest sympathy on the death of your brother. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad time for you all. May Raghnall rest in peace. Úna and Beverly
A lovely gentleman who will certainly be missed. May he rest in peace.
My deepest sympathy to all of Raghnall's beloved family. I've known Raghnall since childhood in Stradbally when he came for holidays, and later as a dear friend and valued colleague in the NMI across from the NLI in Kildare Street in Dublin. May the Drumlohan ogham stones guide you, dear Raghnall, to everlasting peace.
My deepest sympathies to Edel, Muiris, Sorcha & all Raghnall’s family & friends. He was always very generous with his time in the NMI & always good humoured! Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
I first met Raghnall in the early '70s when he was researching archaeological material from the 19th century wide streets commission , High St excavation material along with crannog and related finds stored in the NMI. Part of my task in work was to find these artifacts and put them before his keenly scrutinising eye. He was assiduous in getting through as much as he could to fill his teeming cerebral matter and at that stage one could see the signs of a true scholar emerging with intellectual potential unequalled in the archaeology world that he loved so much. This was matched by his generosity in sharing his unrivalled knowledge of the literature concerning these weighty matters and was always helpful in every way to others. Who could describe a reliquary in all its glory with its intricate patterns, laced with religious iconography and decoration like Raghnall could? I do not think there is any that could come near.
I wish Edel, Sorcha and Muiris the fortitude and courage to carry on in the coming period and know that Raghnall was a person who is rarely found and a great example to many.
Ar Dheis De go raibh a hanam Dilis
Sincere sympathy to Edel and all the extended O Floinn family on the sad passing of Raghnall. A lovely gentleman and great scholar. May he rest in peace
Deepest Sympathy Edel, Sorcha & Muiris, so sorry to hear of Raghnall passing. He was such a lovely neighbour always ready with a wave or a chat.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam
Dear Edel, Raghnall was one of the kindest people I knew. He left a wonderful legacy in his loving family, great friendships and scholarship. He kindly guided my own research with patience, generosity and a much needed sense of humour. I am so sorry that you have lost your beloved and irreplaceable friend. My heartfelt sympathy goes to you, Muiris, Sorcha and all the extended family. We won’t forget his gentle way and sharp intellect. May Raghnall rest in peace.

Orla O’Hanrahan
Comhbhrón ó chroí le Edel agus le muintir uile Raghnaill.
Dear Edel, Muiris, Sorcha and family,
My sincere condolences on Raghnall’s passing. He was a wonderful man, who gave extraordinary encouragement to all who knew and had the privilege of working with him in the National Museum. A gentleman and scholar of immense knowledge, generosity and kindness, who set the bar extremely high in all aspects of archaeology, and the wider collections of the NMI. It was a true honour to know Raghnall, learn from him and be inspired by his great achievements. Thank you Raghnall for being a lasting example to us all.
So very sad to hear of the passing of Raghnall, I was very privileged to have known him and he will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to Edel and family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
Edel, Sorcha, Muiris and the wider family circle, we are heartbroken for you, and hope that you can draw comfort from the affection for and admiration of Raghnall ringing through these messages. Maybe it's because I am in Italy at the moment and cannot be with you tomorrow, but I keep circling back to our first inspection of the Brallo reliquary last year in Bologna; Raghnall was in his element and it was a joy to behold and a privilege to share that moment, followed, much later, by his boyish delight in a late-night dash to a gelateria! To me those two moments bookend my sense Raghnall, a great scholar and great fun to be around. May he rest in peace.
Mo bhron. Ni bheadh a leithead ann aris go deo.
So very very sad to learn of the passing of Raghnall, a true generous scholar who hid his learning lightly. So many memories of his generosity come crowding in, not least for his sustained support for the Roscrea conference down the years and for the fledgling Heritage Centre at Damer House. Our thoughts are with his beloved life partner Edel and his adored Sorcha and Muiris as well as his extended family. His work will form a lasting legacy on so many fronts.
Rest in peace Raghnall with much gratitude for your support over the last four decades.
Comhbhrón ó chroí do Edel agus a muintir ar bhás Raghnaill.
To Raghnall’s family and friends, I would like to express my deepest sympathy at his passing. I had gotten to know Raghnall in the 1980’s during my time spent working on the Woodquay excavations. He was a very kind and decent person. A man of integrity and had great sense of humour. He will be missed. Rest In Peace Raghnall.
Comhbhrón do Edel agus a mhuintir ar bhás Raghnaill.
My sincere sympathy Niamh of the death of your brother Raghnall.
My deepest sympathies to Edel and Raghnall's family. I remember Raghnall from our shared time as undergraduates in UCD where his intellectual potential was already evident and it was matched by his great friendship and generosity. He was a lifelong friend of my wife Jeanne Meldon, from the same undergraduate class, who passed away only a few months ago. Ragnall will be deeply missed.
From the first cup of tea to the last Raghnall smile, it has been a privilege and joy to have known Raghnall as a neighbour and dear friend. Our thoughts are with you all
As a former colleague of Raghnall in the National Museum of Ireland, may I extend my sincere condolences to Edel and family. He was a great man and an inspiration to us all. RIP.
Sincere sympathy to all the o Floinn family on the sad passing of Raghnall May he rest in peace
