Living far away I did not get to meet Ray many times, but remember him to be a very joyful man who knew how to laugh. I will always cherish the many colourful stories told about my grandfather and his rich life. My heartfelt condolences to Mieko and all the lovely children and extended family he leaves behind.

We were always glad to see Raymond, his vitality coloured up our world as children and adults, and his stoic assessment of human nature was balanced with kindness and acceptance. A self-made man, you could give him a bucket of sand and he would make a world of it. He will be missed.

I only met him once or twice, but in my mind Ray Conway was a great man and a complex character, in a sense almost larger than life.

He built potato crisp factories and beautiful furniture, fought off sword swinging burglars, smoked cigars and once owned a Maserati sports car. While not all of this may be accurate, I’m sure he led a full life. He was my grandfather and I will remember him fondly.

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Mieko, Clarissa, Alex, Cliff, Tara and all of Ray's family. May the memories of Ray provide some strength and comfort.
