It was only when I was reading the Connacht Tribune today 21 October that my attention was arrested by the picture of Raymond with a well deserved tribute in the Clifden notes. Had I only known I would have driven out last Wednesday to pay tribute to my last surviving second cousin in the town where I was born, and to participate in his funeral Mass. I extend my sincere condolences to all the Schley family and my regrets that I could not be with you on the day of Raymond's funeral. I have passed on the sad news to my sister Mary (O'Sullivan) and to my brother Gerard (both in Dublin) and they too extend their condolences. Our late mother Helen Canny (nee Joyce) was a first cousin of Raymond's father but their relationship was much closer because our mother was an only child and John Schley acted as protective big brother to his aunt Margaret's only child. They were further bonded because they were niece and nephew to their other aunt Elizabeth Connolly who is buried in the same grave where Raymond's remains now rests. You may all be proud that your Dad, your mother Ann and your grandparents John and Moily achieved so much good in this life for which they will be rewarded in the next.

I was truly blessed to have come to know Raymond Schley. I married his Daughter Maura 17 Years ago. Over the course of time I have come to know Raymond for the special person he was, as a husband to his Loving wife Ann, as a father to all of his children , as a grand father and great grand father to all of his grand children. He was a pillar in the community and respected by all. He was loving, kind, knowledgeable( I used to love picking his brain about history which he loved speaking about:))He was perceptive and keenly aware of what was going on all around him all of the time( a trait inherited by many of his children:) ) He also protected and defended his children but at the same time took the time to prepare them for the vicissitudes of life. When I visited he always had time for me, whether it was for going for walks in the countryside with Dusty, or taking me to visit landmarks in the Irish Countryside. But my absolute favorite times were when we would work in his garden together . We would spend hours strimming and gardening planting veggies and harvesting when ready. He was an inspiration to me and the perfect role model as someone I would want to emulate. I will miss Raymond dearly but know he is Peacefully resting in Heaven with his wife Ann looking down on all the good he created. He was a sincere Blessing in my Life. May he Rest in Peace and May his Memory be ETERNAL With all of my Heart and LOVE
