I was introduced to Richie some years ago when I was invited to join a group to cycle coast to coast Whitehaven to Tynemouth. After a week of adventure, moving from hotels to pubs and even a six birth caravan ( which was not really Richie’s taste) we dipped our front wheels in the water having completed our journey. A friendship was born a bond which took us on several more adventures including the Shaun Kelly bike ride, Ring of Kerry and latterly we went International around Lake Constance. All of these trips were spread over a number of days which gave all in the group time to get to know each other. There was Richie, Danny, Jim, Roy, Mick and Phil. Richie was always front and centre of anything going on and always set the pace which was often difficult to follow. However, there was always one thing that slowed us down. He could eat for Ireland! 😂😂😂 He lived his food. Breakfast, Richie first in and last out ( usually carrying something to sustain him during the ride ahead). On route he could not pass a coffee shop, something Mick had in common with him. He particularly liked the ones who sold scones. After consuming one or more he would give them marks out of ten. Richie was a formidable character who could always put a smile on your face. He is a man that I feel privileged to be able to call him my friend. We will all miss him a great deal but the happy memories will stay with me forever. Thanks Richie and God Bless.

Richie was a true gentleman and a great neighbour. I loved chatting to him on the street, I always walked away a little happier for having seen him. He will be deeply missed in Ballycarnane. My heartfelt condolences to Ann, Deirdre and all the family.
