Deeply saddened to hear of the loss of a fine scholar. From seminal volumes such as "Irish Voters Decide," "The Irish Voter," and "People and Parliament in the European Union: Participation, Democracy, and Legitimacy," as well as numerous research articles, Richard made a profound contribution to the study of Irish and European public opinion and voter behavior. On a personal note, I am indebted to him for being a fantastic mentor, Ph.D. supervisor, and colleague who had oodles of enthusiasm for his craft, and it was an honor to work with him. My deepest sympathies to Margaret, Gillian, Daniel, and the extended family on your loss. We are diminished by his passing but his substantial research contributions and his personal warmth and generosity to so many people, ensures his legacy will live on.

As an undergraduate student who took some of Richard's classes in the 1990's, I remember his inordinate passion for political data and analysis that earned him significant national and international recognition. More importantly he was always a kind and encouraging teacher and the tributes to him reflect his importance as both a mentor and a colleague.
On behalf of all Richard's colleagues across many schools in the UCD College of Social Sciences and Law, our deepest sympathy to Margaret and all Richard's extended family. May the warmth with which he is being remembered bring much comfort to you in the days to come,

Peter first met Richard and Margaret in UCD in 1968. Thereafter, along with Mary, we became firm friends for the next fifty years. We went on some great holidays together in Ireland, France and Italy. Our children, Owen, Conor, Niall and Anna became friends with Gillian and Daniel. We shared many happy events, first our weddings and then our children's weddings, anniversaries, and so on. Richard became Owen's Godfather. Peter's and Richard's professional lives crossed too, as they worked together on RTÉ's election and referenda coverage.

We're going to miss Richard's humour, kindness and companionship. Our thoughts are with Margaret, Gillian and Daniel.
