Condolences and Prayers on the passing of such a sweet gentleman as Richard.. He and his sister Mary always welcomed my adopted father and mother Tony and May Lalor from Kilkenny.. when we their children Ann, Steve and myself, used cycle from home through Callan ( stopping to get ice-cream) then on up that hilly last 10 miles to Richard in Nine Mile House, where we’d be treated to tea and sandwiches, whilst Richard caught Dad up with all the local news, and his horses!
Then off we’d go up that last 2 1/2 miles up to base of that wonderful Slievenamon, where Dad had a cabin!
Mammy would have gone ahead to air the place, light that potbelly stove.. have supper and crash ( we cycled from age 10 yrs). Loved picking hurts on the mountain, smell of honeysuckle, looking for the lucky white heather.. and that marvellous view from the top of the three sister rivers.. Barrow, Nore and the Suir !
Then down we’d go to Bolgers, where men all gathered around the turf fire to hear the news on the radio, and we’d play with their cousins over from England! Then walk home at dusk, listen to the birds, pick watercress for sandwiches next day!
Oh that spring water; rabbit stew and stewed blueberries over French toast…
“There peace comes dropping slow..”
And Richard and dear Mary were always part of that tapestry!
Godspeed Richard.. you’ll be missed🙏❤️
