We were very sorry to hear of Robert's death and send our sincere condolences to Vivienne and family. Robert had a deep but practical commitment to social justice and worked hard to make Ireland a better and fairer place. He had a meticulous mind. In the 1970s he found a way to break the "ban" on contraceptives in Ireland. He spotted that the law said it was illegal to import contraceptives "for sale" and proposed to set up a charitable company that would import contraceptives, Family Planning Services, which would be financed by donations. It was successful, distributing contraceptives throughout Ireland by mail order, and later establishing its family planning clinic. He ran the company for many years and courageously stuck with it when it was prosecuted, unsuccessfully, by the Attorney General, Declan Costello. Robert was a quiet and courteous man who really did change Ireland.
