Howth Singing Circle was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Kelly. A stalwart in our club over many years, he brought unique singing and songwriting, a highly personal style of familiar and new material, tales of a distraught polar bear after the Titanic, tales of Davitt and cardboard suitcases at Kiltimagh Station, unusual variations on unrequited themes, the best impersonation of a horse exhausted after a rumbustious steeplechase, and always a tender take on songs, whether familiar ones transformed by his original settings or those compelling ones self-penned. You never left Robert’s company without a smile, a lift in the heart - though you might be a step of two away before the irony or subtle humour of his last remark struck you. At that point, a look back was rewarded with a nodded grin or thumbs up.

As Eddie Phillips - who visited Robert’s workshop - said, ‘he was a master carpenter’. Howth was blessed when he fashioned our emblem - a beautiful ship’s wheel - a gift of his time and talent that we will cherish. Paddy Daly’s recent photograph of Robert captures his essence.

To Robert’s family and friends, all strength to you in your loss. To Robert, our thanks for the songs and stories, your humour and pathos, your warm welcome and generous friendship, your Mayo brogue.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was such a warm friendly man with a great sense of humour. I remember him from when I was a child in the Cabinteely area and I also met him at the school gates in Wicklow when he was collecting the grandchildren with you. He always had a smile and some funny joke and invited us to see the fabulous display of Christmas lights in his garden which we did, still remembered by mine to this day.
May he be at peace in his heavenly home.
