Such sadness at the loss of such a lovely gentle man in Ronan. It was an honour to have known him, in UCD and then in theatre and festival times. We all had such respect and admiration for his bravery and generosity. And greatly enjoyed his humour! Our deepest sympathies to you Miriam from all the Perrotts.

My deepest condolences to Miriam, Hannah,& Loughlin; Julian & Claire and the family. We lost an extraordinary cousin with whom I have had many wonderful memories, in theatre with him at 16 yrs in a group representing Ireland at the first EU Youth Drama Festival, and in Dramsoc UCD were halcyon days; the years following sharing many laughs and animated discussions. Witty, generous, so intelligent and courageous to the end, he never lost his sense of humour and warmth. We'll not see his like again and we miss him. x

I have been away and just returned and am very sorry to hear of Ronan's passing . I remember Ronan with great fondness and offer my sincere sympathies to all his family . May Ronan rest in peace.

I read Ronan’s book with huge admiration and respect.He was not only a lovely warm funny man but a fine, strong human being.His memoir was a beautiful love story to his family.It was an absolute joy to have enjoyed his friendship in our youth many years ago.

So very saddened to learn of Ronan Smith’s recent death. Ronan… a bright fun-loving compassionate human being who made such a huge impact on all of us privileged to know him. His contribution to the field of dementia care in Ireland and beyond has been truly enormous. Ronan was a champion in every sense of the word, fearless in speaking the truth, raising awareness and determined to make the world a better place for all those living with dementia and their family members. I followed Ronan’s story (since we parted company in UCD in 1976), through his wonderful book which I only just managed to read a few months ago. I was uplifted and inspired by his struggle and determination to tell his story. I had only just managed to contact Julian and agreed that we would go and visit Ronan together. I was thoroughly devastated at his sudden demise without even the chance to attend his funeral and say goodbye. May he enjoy the peace he so thoroughly deserves.

Deepest condolences to Miriam and family at this most raw and numbing of times. We were in the same class and school from primary through to Leaving Cert in 1975. Many a fond memory of visiting his home, where I lived nearby, playing on his Scalextric game and his mum bringing in Mi-Wadi and biscuits. Everything about Ronan spoke of a very giving and caring man. Rest In Peace.

To Miriam & Family, although our acquaintance was short, it has been a pleasure to care for Ronan, a true gentleman with a smile to brighten the dullest day. You hear the expression ‘one of life’s gentlemen’ but this was forcefully true about Ronan. He could light up a room with his wit, humour, intelligence and just decency. Spent many a wonderful long hike in his beloved Wicklow mountains with him back in the day. Rest in power Ronan. Sending my love and sympathy to Miriam and his family.

Miriam and family, it was a long time since I'd seen Ronan but he will always remain in my fondest memory for his kindness, his wicked sense of humour and his gentleness. I remember your wedding so well and how happy you both were surrounded by friends and family and all those wild flowers we picked the day before to brighten the place up - it was such a special day. My heart goes out to you all at this difficult time.

Ronan’s care for others was evident from the moment we met on the Ark board, where he guided our work with such integrity. My mother was living with Dementia at that time and he never let a meeting go by without enquiring how she, and I were coping. He was always so supportive and understanding. It was a privilege to work with him also in IMMA where he advised on our dementia friendly programme, Azure. His infectious enthusiasm and energy, joyfulness and love of his family and friends made being in his company very special. May he rest in peace.

Going to school with somebody who had been in films certainly got my attention. Fifty years ago, we were part of a clandestine "cassette DJ" operation which included Timmy Thompson, Cisco Pike and John Falstaff. Ronan's alias was the cunningly obscure "Ron Smith". We sat beside each other for the entire Leaving Cert year, and soon thereafter he tipped me off to the wonders of Yorkshire jazz rock pioneers Backdoor (something he later denied hotly). I believe I bought the classic Layla/Bell Bottom Blues single from him. A quarter century later, I spotted his name in the Riverdance program when it came to Atlanta, and in time we reconnected. Fond memories of the amazing house (and family) that he and Miriam created in Lacken, a leisurely cycle around the Blessington lakes, a Brazilian lunch on Manhattan's west side, and the Tour de Conamara circa 2017. Goodnight pal, rest easy. Yer da Brendan (and ma Beryl Fagan) would be VERY proud of you.
