I met Ronnie when I worked in Pioneer Investments and he was on the Board there. He was always so kind and patient with me at the quarterly board meetings especially if I made a mistake. I was only in my 20’s and he was so kind and a genuinely lovely gentleman. I loved our little chats throughout our time at Pioneer. As I was young he also loved that I had no idea who he was. I think he was very charmed by that.

A local legend who made the world feel small and our dreams feel possible. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy is safely woven into the fabric of our history.

We as a country are the better for him, his achievements and how he carried himself.

It was a privilege to meet him on a few occasions. The last time was in the company of my late father Brendan, also a Sandymount man, to whom he gave both inspiration and advice as a 440 yard athlete in the early 60s.

A beautiful memory, as a youngster, of Ronnie’s wonderful Olympic success in Melbourne and the pride that engulfed our nation. Decades later I had the honour of hosting a Civic celebratory dinner for the local Boley tug of war team that had won the World Championship. Memorably we invited Ronnie as guest speaker to pay tribute to their success, and, we were all so privileged to share the company of this very gracious and humble gentleman who wore his greatness so lightly on his shoulders. My deepest condolences to the Delany family on the passing of the true Irish hero in Ronnie who well before my time became one of the Nations first great sports stars.

Always loved him talking about his achievements on the track especially at the MCG 1956 when the Olympics would come around. He joins another fellow 1956 Melbourne Olympian in boxing bronze medallist Tony "Socks" Byrne from Drogheda in the sky to look over the athletes of the present and future.

Sincere condolences to all the Delany family. You don't know me but I met Ronnie as a very young civil servant in 1970 or thereabouts when he called to our office on a family matter. We had an interesting conversation and he gave me his B & I business card - "try this next time instead of Sealink". He was most engaging, a most sincere and indeed humble (in the proper sense) person.
He will live long in the memories of all, especially those who were privileged to meet him.

Ronnie had a tremendous ability to communicate his outstanding sporting achievements and in Carrick GC he held his audience captive recounting in detail his Gold medal win at the Melbourne Olympics.
Ronnie was a genuine friend over many decades of Olympic Games over several Continents and gave freely of his time and showed appreciation with his broad smile and endearing personality. His Golden achievement at Melbourne was an inspiration to so many young budding Olympians. His memory will be held in highest esteem by all who had the opportunity to meet him and experience his infectious personality.
He gave generously to the Irish Olympic cause and it was an honour to have known Ronnie a giant of Irish Olympic sport.

I was Ronnies postman for many years and he was always very friendly and nice to me whenever we met. I'll always remember him inviting me into his house to show me his Olympic gold medal and photos from his life. And i was very honoured when he invited me to the unveiling of his statue in Arklow where he was born and i now live. I had the privilege of meeting him at the Dublin City Marathon in the V.I.P. area . He was a true gentleman and made everyone who spoke to him feel at ease. May he rest in peace.

R.I.P Ronnie. A true gentleman. Little did i know i would rescue the cat belonging to an Olympic champion from a tree outside my Apt. in Cairnbrook. First i had to entice Ronnie down off the ladder in case he killed himself. Both cat and Ronnie went home happy.

My first encounter with Ronnie was in the old dressing rooms in Santry Stadium on 2/12/1961 where I was getting ready to run my very first cross-country race.He commented that the spikes I was using were too good for cross-country and he gave me a pair from his bag which I cherish to this day.
