This sad news has only reached us now - we are so sorry to learn of Rory’s death. Deepest sympathy to Fionnuala and family. We have great memories, including those busy, committed but always joyful and energising days of political engagement in the 1970s and the more reflective and productive times on Paros. Rory’s creativity and intelligence is beautifully expressed in his poetry.
So sorry to hear of Rory's passing - I only heard today, almost two months after his passing. Rory was a true gentleman & scholar & poet, & among a handful of lovely encounters was a reading in Paris to celebrate 30 years of Poetry Ireland in 2008 & where Rory was fabulous company & fun, & full of the joys of life. My sincere condolences to his wife & children & grandchild & many, many friends.
Dear Family and Friends of Rory. I remember most laughing and joking with Rory in the Austin Clarke Library in 1987. We had great fun.
Rory kept poetry alive in Ireland in a bleak time. Very little money for the arts then. He was very generous to me. His work is done. Home to his rest in taken. Love, Tom Kiernan xx
So sorry to hear belatedly of Rory's death. Glad his family were around him. I remember him from the Poetry Ireland days of the 80s when I co-founded Beaver Row Press. He was charming, erudite, sometimes funny and 'larger than life' in some ways. My deepest condolences to Fionnuala and the rest of the family......I know he will be deeply missed and forever remembered and cherished.
Dear Fionnuala, Orla and Fiona,

We were so sorry to hear of our cousin Rory’s passing. On behalf of Daniel, Helen and Mary Rose Brennan we wish to offer you our deepest sympathy.
Dear Fiona,
This is very sad news. Your Dad was such a lovely person. We are thinking of you and sending lots of love to Fionnuala, Orla, Luca & Ciarán & Keith. Rest in Peace.
Dear Fionnualla!

It is only now that I can convey my sincere condolences to you and your family for the death of Rory. We are very sad and hope that you and your family will all get over this difficult loss well.

Please understand that I can only send you my heartfelt condolences now because I just had to undergo a cataract operation on both eyes.

As a memory of Rory, I am sending you his words, which were so comforting to me at the time, and which I will never forget, which he wrote to me in 2001 on the occasion of my mother's death.

All good wishes for you and your family from Curt & Carmen

Dear Fionnuala, that is sad to hear. Rory was one of those rare people; a realist who did not let the more dismal aspects of the world get in the way of his good humor. "We choose the tune if not the steps' he said; And despite our world being, "a globe garden in a field of stars" which "does not dwell on the end of things at all', he will nevertheless be missed and warmly remembered by those he knew and whose lives he touched.

Irini and Jim send you, Fiona and Orla our sympathies and look forward to seeing you.
Rory was a unique friend... so multi talented and always a delight to spend time with. He was also very much a family man and was always close to his daughters, maybe because of living in a very small community on Paros beck in the day! He and Fionuella would have been married 56 years this week..that says it all, very much in love and always thoughtful to each other. His poetry was splendid, descriptive and insightful.. He will be very much missed on his adopted island.. we remembered him in style on Saturday, and did not forget the traditional ouzo.. KaloTaxidi ...
Dear Fionnuala

So sad to lose such a special person.

My dear pal Fiona was blessed to have such a father - full of love, joy, curiosity and glow. Fionnuala, his soulmate; watching you together was a lesson in life and living. I am so very grateful to have benefitted from Rory's company over many decades and more recently, spending special times together with you all in the magical home he built with his own, wonderful hands, in Paros. He is, and was, one in a million.

Love to you all - Fionnuala, Fiona, Orla, Ciaran, Keith and Luca x

Deeply saddened to learn of Rory's death and my condolences to you, Fionnuala and your family for the loss of a very fine friend and poet. I will always cherish memories of the adventures he and I went through in the early days of the founding of Poetry Ireland, the challenges he helped overcome, his warm and friendly approach to everyone, and the confidence and urgency with which he dealt with problems. We soldiered together in Cambridge at festivals of poetry there and I greatly relied on him to get us in on the conversations and the plans. His and your, FIonnuala, kindness in lending your house in Paros to Ursula and me in our early years together, is remembered with deep gratitude. I feel honoured to have published his early collection of poetry, "The Walking Wounded", as one of the first publications of the newly established Dedalus Press; indeed it was he who gave the press its name, joining together the Joycean novel and the myth of the creator Daedalus. A blessing on his spirit and love from Ursula and myself to the whole family.
My heartfelt condolences to Fionnuala, Fiona, and Orla on Rory's sad passing. I will always cherish the fond memories of my many conversations with Rory over coffee at the Shelbourne.
To my lovely old friend Nuala on your immeasurable loss of your beloved Rory who was without doubt, your soulmate . I remember the night you met him all those years ago in Belfast when we were all so very young. And what great memories you made together as you both journeyed through life with each other .
Very sorry to hear of Rory's passing. I remember him well from our collaborations together in the late 1980s, when he was Director of Poetry Ireland, and I was in charge of the Poetry Thursday at the Alliance Française de Dublin. I recall with particular pleasure a reading we did at Bewley's Café on Grafton Street, at which my boss, Rémy Durand, translated poems by Rory into French, and Rory poems by Rémy into English. It was quite an evening. Requiescat in pace.

Not my father, but a perfect father figure—you shaped so much of our growing years in both Greece and Ireland. Your booming laugh, the firmest handshake and shoulder pat! and that infectious grin earned you the affectionate nickname "Jack," those who know, know ..
