Royden (Roy) Bedell

I offer Colette, Cris, Kate, Nina and the wider extended Bedell and Farmer families my most sincere condolences upon the recent passing of Roy. Roy was a charming man with whom I thoroughly enjoyed some great sailing adventures together and I admired his maritime photography after his lifetime of working for RTÉ.

I am sure that you are all deeply upset after his long illness but please be assured that he will always be remembered in sailing circles by those who encountered him in Dun Laoghaire. I apologise for being unable to make the funeral as I was indisposed at the time.

I thought that I might share with you all two Sanskrit shlokas that curse death and the demise of a dear friend. I thought that you might like them in honour of Kate’s time in India.

"Jarāmṛtyū hi bhūtānāṃ khāditārau vṛkāviva | Balināṃ durbalānāṃ ca hrasvānāṃ mahatāmapi" 

• Translation:
Old age and Death are the devourers of all creatures, like wolves. They devour the strong, the weak, the short, and the tall alike.

"Yaavadbadhdo maruda dehe yaavacchittam nirākulam | Yaavaddrshṭibhruvormadhye tāvatkālabhayaṃ kutaḥ" 

• Translation:
As long as breath is restrained in the body, as long as the mind is undisturbed, and as long as the gaze is fixed between the eyebrows, there is no fear from Death.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis! Ní maith liom bhur dtrioblóid freisin!

My deepest sympathies, Colette, to you and to yours and Roy’s families at this saddest time. Roy was a treasure to work with, so witty, kind and generous spirited with this rookie producer. Slán abhaile, Roy.

I’m so sorry for your sad loss Colette. Roy was a great colleague and every filming day we spent together was a joy and never passed without a laugh. I’m still dining out on “Royisms” May he rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear of Roy Bedell's passing. I worked with Roy countless times when I was a reporter for Cláracha Gaeilge in RTÉ. Roy was great fun to be around and his infectious good humour on the road made all of our filming trips an absolute joy. Quiet and understated and very very witty, Roy was quite simply a brilliant colleague and cameraman.

My sincere sympathies to all of Roy's family and friends, especially Colette with whom I also had the great good fortune to work at home and abroad.

My deepest sympathy, Colette, on Roy's death. It's many many years since we met, but I have fond memories of his gentleness and his courtesy. In a world of many big egos, his calm presence was lovely to be around.

Colette We were very saddened to hear of the death of Roy,what a lovely gentleman.The service yesterday certainly captured the essence of Roy.

So sad to hear of the passing of Roy. I knew him for many years in the "Funny Farm" (Donnybrook) Made warm connections with Roy from stills and onwards to warmer connections to film cameras.
