Dear Ruth,

I cannot believe i am writing this. I will never see you again but i have not yet accepted that fact. A short while ago i turned the page on my Birthday Calender, and there it was as it has been for so long, your name written big opposite the 17th of January.,thinking "maybe this year".

I havent seen you since June 2004, that a brief but wonderful rekindling of an old friendship, begun in Cork in 1981.

I doubt i ever said it, and back then probably did not have the wherewithall, to tell you how beautiful you were. You really were. But that word alone is not enough to describe you and your warmth, your humanity, your lack of self pity, your optimism, your sense of fun, your overall goodness. Even your anger seemed couched in warmth.

Quite honestly, i adored you.

I had never met anyone quite like you, and 42 years on from our first encounter i still haven‘t.

We shared a lot of madness, laughter, tears, heartbreak, joy (and dancing), and the two years i lived under the same roof(s) as you,Trish, Lucy, Paul, John (and others) were among the happiest of my life.

Thank you for being you.

I love you for that.

I miss you, but you rest in my heart.

Like so many, we are shocked and saddened to learn that Ruth is no longer with us. Recalling so many great conversations we had with her, her warmth and sense of humour, and her regard for ourselves and everyone in her life. Deepest condolences to Amaya and all her family.

I was so sorry and so shocked to hear of Ruth's passing and my thoughts are with Amaya and all the family. I first met Ruth in the mid-80s in Madrid and I have such happy memories of her as a warm, kind-hearted, fun-loving friend always with a big smile and ready to give a hug or provide a shoulder to cry on when needed. After leaving Madrid, we saw each other again in Cork, Scotland and back in Spain before sadly losing touch.
So sorry not to be able to travel to the memorial service but I'll be there in spirit.
