Sally Shovelin

To my dear friend Sally. I was lucky to work alongside her with the homeless for many years. I was even luckier to become her friend. She was inspirational and unique in her approach to the service we provided to the homeless - so deeply emphatic and giving and highly challenging and disdainful of bureaucratic procedures or (un)charitable rules. Sally was the best fun and one of the kindest, generous people I have ever known. I will always remember and keep with me forever, the warmth of her loyalty to me, the glint in her eye, her wonderful smile and laugh, her gorgeous accent and her all round amazingness. I will never forget her.

Shocked and saddened to recently hear that Sally had passed away

Sally was always passionate and fearless in defence of the underdog. She was such an authentic and principled person, a whirlwind that never flinched in the face of injustice but took on the powers that be. Rest in peace Sally.

Deepest condolences to John Gallagher, Nora Shovelin, Sally's close friends Betty Purcell and Helen Mahony - and all other friends and family who crossed Sally's path. I first met Sally in the mid to late 1970's via membership of People's Democracy - and participation in many left-wing, feminist, and anti-imperialist political campaigns. We remained in contact for many decades. We worked together in campaigns to free the Birmingham Six, for Women's Right to Choose, as socialist opponents of the Good Friday Agreement, on left-wing election campaigns. Sally had an impish sense of humour, often needed to calm us all down. She was an activist in the trade union I worked for (FÓRSA) and its predecessor, the Local Government and Public Services Union (LGPSU). In the late 1980's and early 1990's Sally was chairperson of an LGPSU Dublin local authority branch, and we often met tp lan, plot and chat. Sally will be missed by many people.

I'm so sad to hear of the death of Sally. A warm and committed colleague in Community Services.

We were unable to be present at Sally's funeral Mass but we were there in prayerful spirit. What a wonderful fitting tribute for Sally who was loved and respected by all.
