My deepest sympathies to his loved ones and all those who mourn the passing of Seamus Deane.He was a truly gifted academic, poet, writer, author and an inspiring lecturer. Great memories of him in UCD in the late 1970s when I was an English student. So lucky to have had him as my tutor in my final year . May he Rest In Peace.

May I take the opportunity of commiserating with your Emer and all of the extended family. Seamus was a wonderful academic, writer, author, a brilliant and passionate lecturer. I have so many memories of him in UCD in the early 1980's as a student. He also acted as a tutor in my final year. An exceptional man in so many ways.

I am sorry to hear about the death of Professor Deane. As a UCD English Language and Literature student 1983 to 1986, he was a generous and gentle educator who taught me the importance of reading not just the words on the page but also deeper into the text. It’s a gift which enriches my experience every time I open a book and I value it to this day. I wish his family strength and peace.

Dear Emer and family, my condolences on your Dad's passing. I was going to say may he rest in peace but having read some of his eulogies I don't think he would enjoy the peaceful option. So may his spirit live on in your great work.

Professor Deane was a brilliant, awe inspiring lecturer for many of us studying English in UCD in the eighties and he had a great influence on our sensibility and critical thinking to this day.

Condolences to Marion and all Seamus’s family. He was my tutor in college and one of the three great teachers in my life. Have admired his novel, poetry and critical writing. One of the literary giants of our time.

Death is so final. The wrench is hard. My sincere condolences to Prof., Emer Nolan and to all who knew and loved Prof., Deane. 🌀

Our deep sympathy goes to Marion and family and to Emer and Iseult. Seamus was a wonderful colleague at UCD, sharp, witty, simply brilliant. He was an inspiration to us all, just as he was to students and graduate students. As a friend he was warm, funny and challenging. On the literary level he was simply astonishing in his eloquence and originality. He will be greatly missed.

Back in the day I was lucky enough to have been gifted a signed copy of Seamus Deane's great novel, Reading in the Dark as well as a full set of the Penguin Classics James Joyce works that he acted as general editor on. I encountered him on a few occasions and he was always decent to me. May he rest in peace.
