My sincere sympathy to the family of Seamus McGurran.
He taught me maths with commitment, dedication and often great patience and sympathy I’m sure. I will always remember his kindness, good humour and infectious laughter. He taught with a love for his subject and brought us to love it also.

Sincere condolences Christine on the death of seamus, may his gentle soul Rest In Peace. 🙏

Seamus taught me maths in St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, during the mid to late ’70s. He was one of the most patient men I have ever met, who, despite having to deal with a ‘highly spirited’ class (putting it kindly!), never once lost his temper with us. His dedication and obvious love of his subject translated across to his students – no mean feat! – and meant that we all did better than expected in the ‘Inter Cert’ and subsequent Leaving Cert.
Our paths crossed many years later, thanks to Christine’s close friendship with my mother Frances. He was still the same Seamus – a gentleman to the core. We send our sincere condolences to Christine, Paul, Kevin and Sheila, his grandchildren, his son- and daughters-in-law, extended family members, and many friends.
Finally, Plato once said: "I have hardly ever known a mathematician who was capable of reasoning" – it was a pity that he never met Seamus McGurran. I’m sure that they are both now reasoning out some of the more difficult celestial questions and equations and will be greeting us with the results when our time comes! May his gentle soul rest in peace.
