It was with profound regret that I heard of the death of Seamus and I want to offer my sincere sympathy to Dearbhaile on her sad loss.

Seamus was a colleague of mine for many years on the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT). It would be difficult to exaggerate the enormous contribution Seamus made to the EAT. He brought with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, sensitivity, common sense and wisdom. He was utterly prepared for each hearing and had always prepared extensive notes for the case in hand, which were always so helpful in dealing with the matter, of which he played such an important part.
Although Seamus came from the Union side of the house, he never let that influence him and he was scrupulously fair in matters before the Tribunal. Apart from all this he was a very entertaining man, and I really enjoyed hearing stories of when he came to Dublin to work at a time which was very challenging for all workers. Seamus will be remembered for the efforts he made towards improving the terms and conditions of retail workers which should never be forgotten.
Seamus was a very entertaining man and many’s the cup of tea we had, and stories exchanged while waiting for cases to be heard.
Tom Ryan Ex EAT

To Dearbhaile and the O’Donnell family:

On behalf of the staff of the Division of Laboratory Medicine, Trinity College Dublin, may I extend our sincere sympathy to you on the death of your father Séamus. May he rest in peace.
Dear Dearbhile,
Your dad Seamus was a lovely person for whom I had a great respect and admiration and of whom I am proud to call my friend. We used to have cups of tea together in Malahide and in the canteen in the EAT. We sat on many cases together all over the Country. A man of common sense and vast experience that left nothing to be desired.
Seamus brought stability to IDATU when it was most needed. His attention to detail and his committment to his union and later to the EAT were unequalled. He takes with him a huge piece of the history of the retail trade. And great respect.
Janet Hughes
Trade union official and later Rights Commissioner in Seamus's day.
Sincere sympathy to Derbhaille and all the O’Donnell family. Seamus was my first boss in my first job in the old Brown Thomas store. I subsequently became involved in union matters when Seamus “volunteered” me onto a delegation, the first of many meetings and committees that we both were involved with over the years. His commitment to fair play and justice were evident in all his work both for the union and subsequently with the Employment Appeals Tribunal. He was a gentleman and will be greatly missed.
Deepest sympathy to Dearbhaile, Cormac and Kathleen and the O Donnell family on the passing of Seamus.
May he rest in peace.
