I was very sad to learn of Sean's passing. I remember him from the great days when he presided over the Horseshoe Bar in the Shelbourne - he recounted his experiences in a marvellous memoir and I was privileged to be invited to the launch. He was also a stalwart of John Cooney's Humbert Summer School, and we had many a great conversation during those memorable sojourns in Mayo. My condolences on their great loss to Josephine, Etain and Daragh, and all his extended family.

Marie and I were so sorry to hear of the death of Sean and we hope Josephine and the family will accept our deepest condolences. We will miss our little chats and discussions, setting the world to rights, the exploits of Hercules, how to grow tomatoes and even pulling a pint! Go dtuga an Tiarna maith an chuid eile de Sean siorai.

Maire & Gerry Kennedy, Dublin.
Not only did Sean Boyd excel in his long stewardship of the Horseshow Bar in Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel, he endowed Irish historiography with a splendid memoir of the flamboyant characters who frequented that hostelry in late twentieth century Ireland.

This gentle but doughty Belfastman’s calm and ultra-efficient command of that world famous drinking space was awesome, especially on packed Friday evenings in the era of Garret FitzGerald and Charlie Haughey.

In addition to his Shelbourne fame and dedicated family life as husband of Josephine and father of Daragh and Etain, Sean was a central figure in the annual Humbert Summer School’s debates in Co Mayo, where he doubled up as my aide de camp and driver.

His hotel expertise was always an asset in the demanding task of arranging top-table seating at lunches and dinners for place-conscious guest speakers and local dignitaries. The quietest of men was also the most convivial and courteous.

- John Cooney, journalist and founder-director of the Humbert Summer School.
