Sincere condolences to all of the Devery family. I remember a handful of teachers very clearly and Mr Devery was one of those, he knew our backgrounds, our parents and where we came from. I recall him wanting to speak to me as a class rep.. I was quaking in my bones ...but it was to ask if the room we were in was truly freezing as we left a note on the door. As I reflect on my schooling / education, there are a few teachers who were experts in their craft and Master Devery (as we called him!) was one of the few. He ignited in me a love of History and, through his mentoring of our debating team, a love of language - always searching for the precise phrase to simply capture nuance and complexity.
