Sincere condolences to Sean’s family, he was an inspiration to me and many other architectural students. I recall an incident in the mid 70’s when I arrived at studio despairing of a project and expecting admonition, only to receive his complete encouragement and perceptive guidance to get back on track, never forgotten. Also caught his mountaineering bug with stories of early exploits, particularly E Africa, and subsequent books. A life lived to the full, may he rest in peace.
I am so sad to hear of this news. My condolences to all the family. My first meeting with Sean was in 2016 when he called into the O’Briens wine store in Carrickmines and he enquired about getting wine delivered to his home. I said I’d deliver the wine myself after work and thus began the start of my wine deliveries to Sean. I moved store to the Beacon but I still took Sean’s order over the phone and always looked forward to delivering them and having the chats. I have traveled a lot myself so we shared stories but with Sean been 45 years older his stories were so much better! I traveled to Tanzania 3 years ago and he told me when he was there in the 1950s…such a different time and how himself & Nuala and the kids came back to Ireland by boat!! Arriving just before Christmas that year. He told me about his long walk south when he retired and I managed to get the book last year online. My last chat with Sean was a few months ago and he was in good form. Little did I know when he walked into the store in Carrickmines in 2016, I have just returned to that store again, did I know the friendship I would get from a wonderful gentleman, and the amazing stories I would hear. He had a voice like David Attenborough and stories just as good. Rest in peace Sean…. Darren Hogan.
Eoin, Colm Finn - to all his family and friends a fond farewell - it was a great privilege to know Seán and enjoy his company as he shared many rich life experiences. Despite his declining health he was wise and courageous to the last. Slán
I knew Sean only really as the supportive shadow of Nuala who was a great friend and role model. I knew of his interests in orienteering, travelling, walking in general reflectively for long distances and I value greatly the sketches of nature and of landscapes that he created and that I received regularly as Christmas Greetings. I had the pleasure of enjoying Finn's hospitality in NZ in 2017 and I offer my sincere sympathies to Colm Eoin and Finn. It can be difficult to come to terms with the fact that you are now the flag-bearers for the family with all that it entails and I'm sure you will make a great job of it. Both Nuala and Sean. will be greatly missed.
Sincerest Condolences to Sean's Family. I was a student of Sean's in Bolton Street before moving to Kampala, to only find Sean had worked here in the 50's Sean and Nuala visited in 2006 after 50 years before writing Snows on the Equator about his time in Uganda. May he rest in peace
Sean was my tutor in Bolton Street; sorry to hear of his passing. A gentle soul with kind enthusiasm ..... may he Rest In Peace.
It is sad hearing of the death of Sean, the passing of a life - and one so fully lived – and the passing of an era that so many were connected to
Love to all of his family and may he rest in peace
Sad to hear of the passing of your father Eoin, Colm and Fionnuala - and a founding father of the sport that brought so many of us together. I have thought of Sean many a time over the years on passing his house on the way up Three Rock. I will continue to do so.
Sean and Nuala were a hub that connected and inspired people over many years in their quirky house on the edge of Three Rock. I got to know Sean through Nuala and Co-counselling, and continued to see them through books and hill-walking. Sean was a man of aesthetic sensibilities and diverse talents. Even when his life became restricted as his health declined, he maintained his vibrant spirit. He had a long and well-lived life. I will miss him for his warmth and good cheer, as well as for his story- telling, which kept the past alive.
I'm sorry to hear of Sean's passing. He was an inspiring man and something of a role model. I enjoyed his company very much.
Sending condolences to the family from the Cahill Family in Western Australia. Rest in Peace.
I know Sean through co-counselling and have fond memories of meeting him at gatherings, a few years back now. A warm, wise and gifted man, I found, full of the wonder of life. He had a positive presence.
Sean's books and drawings remain an inspiration to the next generation of emerging Architects in Bolton Street now SABE ( School of Architecture Building and Environment) -at the Technological University of Dublin. First Year Architecture dedicates their current City Survey drawings to his memory.
I met Sean briefly when we were convalescing at Our Lady’s Manor in 2022 . He was such a lovely man and very easy to talk to. It turned out he had been my younger brothers tutor at Bolton Street. My brother remembered him with great fondness. Rest in Peace Sean.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis.
My sympathy to all the Rothery family on the passing of Sean.I have referred my Dublin Urban Sketcher Group to his architectural books for drawing inspiration.I did architecture in Bolton St,with his guidance.I was in junior class with Colm at Marys.
Sincere sympathies to all of the Rothery family on Sean’s passing. I remember his energy and storytelling in the early days of Irish orienteering. His story about a piece of steel in his hip, from an injury sustained in the Alps, and how it affected his compass bearings, was often told and enjoyed.
May he rest in peace on the higher slopes.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in the loss of your father and grandfather. Sean was inspirational in his energy, achievements and output. He will be greatly missed.
My condolences to all the family. I know my mum and dad were very fond of Sean and spoke very highly of him. My memories were of a very friendly man who was always running!! Always remember the good times.
I am so sorry to hear of Seans death. He was always good company on orienteering trips with the veterans teams and a willing helper at events.
My sympathies to the whole family.
Finn, Colm and Eoin, We were really sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. You and your families are in our thoughts at this sad time.
So very sad to hear of Sean's death, my sincere sympathy to all the Rothery family and friends. He was a multi-talented and wonderful human being, always full of infectious energy, enthusiasm for life and a gifted raconteur.
Generations of architectural students were privileged to be recipients of his generously shared knowledge and experience in so many disciplines.I am eternally grateful to him for the endless encouragement and kindness shown to me, when he was my tutor & year master.
May he rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to Colm Fionnuala and Owen. Sean was a great human being a man of very high integrity, creativity and enthusiasm. A life well lived.
Sorry for your great loss. I had the great pleasure of a couple of visits with coffee in his den, talking for several hours of his life, his finely-written books, his marvellous drawings, his walks and climbs, of art, poetry, architecture etc etc. I seldom met a man who lived life and loved life more passionately. May he rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to Eoin, Colm & Fionnuala on the sad passing of Sean I was priviliged to have him as a tutor in Bolton Street and spending some great days orienteering in his company. May he rest in peace
Our sympathy to Eoin, Colm and Fionnuala and their families on Seán’s passing. Seán was inspiring in his enthusiasms for outdoor activities and was an orienteer for as long as any of us can remember, back to the establishment of our sport in Ireland in the 1960’s.
May he rest in peace.
My deepest condolences to all the family, especially Eoin, Colm and Finn.
Unfortunately, I don’t think I can make it to Dublin for the funeral.

Your cousin Brian in Sweden.
So sorry to hear of your loss.
May Sean Rest in Peace.
When I arrived in Ireland in 1962, Sean and Josh Lynam were generous in their welcome and introduction to the Irish rock climbing scene. Sean was always infectiously enthusiastic about the latest project or new route.
Sincere sympathies to Eoin and the family.

Condolences to the Rothery family. Sean was an inspirational lecturer and has contributed a great deal to our knowledge of modern architecture. His personal interest, encouragement and support is also remembered with appreciation by his architectural students.
One of the best. Good memories of Sean from college days.
My deepest sympathies to Eoin, Colm and Finn on the very sad loss of your Dad. He was a man of huge integrity and artistry - Sean made an enormous contribution to documentation of 20th century Irish architecture, as well of course to mountaineering, orienteering and all things outdoors. May he rest in peace.
With heartfelt condolences.
Sean was a great teacher, an inspiration for me since my time as his student. I treasure his books. Very sorry for his loss. He leaves a great legacy.
Condolances to the Rothery family. Your dad was as an energetic, enthusiastic and inspirational lecturer and studio master; generous with his knowledge and experience, he was a great introduction and guide to
his students as they commenced their journey in Architecture. May he rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to all of Seán’s family, may he rest in peace.
Sean was my Instructor when, I did the IMC rock climbing course at Dalkey in 1964. In later years I was honoured to launch his book 'a long walk south'. He passed on his love of mountaineering with enthusiasm. My condolences to his family at his passing. May he rest in peace.
My deepest sympathies on Sean's passing. My few words are insufficient to honour the contribution that Sean made to mine and my colleague's architectural education. His contributions to the appreciation of the vernacular at DIT - Bolton Street laid a foundation that still supports various practices across the country and even the world. I will remember him for his principled and clear thinking coupled with his enthusiastic belief in the architect's role in society.
Condolences to Sean's family at this sad time.
May he Rest in Peace
