Seán Sherwin

I had the privilege of getting to know Sean through his involvement in the organisation of the exhumation of Thomas Kent executed in 1916 and reinterred in September 2015 in his family plot in Castlelyons following a State Funeral.
Sean was a gentleman to the tips of his fingers, an unassuming and interesting person to share time with.
My sympathy to you all of his family at this very sad time.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.

My heartfelt condolences to Sean's loved ones on his death. I had contact with him through my work with county councillors and later through meeting him at the annual commemoration in Bodenstown, Co Kildare. In many ways, Sean Sherwin never left Rooskey and it was always so politically refreshing to meet up with him there. He was a particularly honest political administrator and a man of his word who gave his all for the party he believed in.Slan abhaile a Sheain, you;ll be missed.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Sean and my condolences to his family and wide circle of friends. Sean was a true patriot and devoted his life to serving his country and ensuring that those who served Ireland well were remembered. I had the privilege along with Sean of folding the national flag over the coffin of Sean's great friend the late Kevin Boland. When last we met we discussed Sean's interesting visit to Libya as part of an Irish government trade delegation .... Sean again putting Ireland's interests first. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Sean was a stalwart to both my parents over the years and of huge assistance to the family when my father died in 2003. He never succumbed to pressure to ostracise my father. He was simply and stoically steadfast. He will be missed by those who knew him.

I was fortunate to meet Seán when he was meeting families of the ten men who were executed in Mountjoy during the War of Independence and who were exhumed and removed to Glasnevin Cemetery in 2001. He was a very skilled negotiator, a very competent, sincere and friendly man. I was privileged to know him and I enjoyed meeting him whenever our paths crossed since then. So sad to hear the news. I was in Australia, so I missed the funeral. Sean was a lovely person, with infinite patience when dealing with people like me when I used to be on The Committee Of Fifteen for ten years from 1992. He will be greatly missed. Suaimhneas Siorrai.

Sean took the bravest of brave decisions at a very young age , steadfastly adhering to his deep felt republican principles - he set himself apart as a man of conviction - who lived the adage “ there is never the wrong time to do the right thing”.

Your dad was a force of nature. A good man to his core. I’m very sorry to hear about his passing. Himself and your lovely, funny, smart mam will be up in heaven, giggling together, conspiratorially. Their love for you and each other is unending.

My father, Brian Whelan absolutely adored Sean and Betty, and I did as well. I must’ve met them when I was about 15. I’m so proud that my father knew them and that I knew them too. Your dad made a big difference in my life, and I think about him very often because he taught me such a lot.

Your dad’s intelligence was vast. He was genuinely interested in everything and everybody.

Both your father and mother modeled how to be good people, how to love your community and be committed members of society. Their generosity knew no bounds. Your father‘s ability to listen to people and to get on with people across all walks of life, and all faiths was wonderful.

Sean loved Ireland, and of course, Ireland loved him back. How incredible to be a TD at 23. He held power to account, he stood up for the people of West Dublin and the whole of Ireland.

Before I left Dublin to go to art school in London, he reminded me that everywhere I go in the world I was representing the Irish people, and I was too set a good example of what an Irish person can be.

I painted his portrait when I was young and so as a result, I got to know his face very well. He was always smiling.
