Dear Phyllis and your beautiful family and Therese, his sister, and family, we were so sad and shocked to hear of Shay's very sudden and untimely passing. A terrible loss to your family, to his friends, and to Portmarnock Community. We and our family had such respect and regard for Shay. He was so kind and friendly and always had time for a chat with everyone he came in contact with, young and old. Phyllis we have great memories of a particular lovely holiday shared with you and Shay and your family in Portugal and the great sing songs we had there. He has left a beautiful family sad and so too soon. But you are so close you will be a great support to each other and especially to you Phyllis. Your friends, you have so many, will be there for you all too. Thinking of and praying for you all and your extended family at this very sad time. Rest in peace Shay. You will never be forgotten.

Phyllis, we were so sorry to hear of Shay’s sudden passing. What a beautiful, kind, compassionate and loving man Shay was. He made us feel so welcome when we moved to Portmarnock in 1996 that we thought he was the Mayor of Portmarnock! In truth, he was in all but name. We have such fond memories of him from storing our kids Santa bikes in your house until I collected them on Christmas Eve to “lending” you to me for our mixed doubles victory over Jimmy and Brid. He warned me several times to stay away from you, all in his customary good humour! Portmarnock. and particularly the Tennis Club, will be all the poorer without Shay’s presence. We can’t imagine the void his passing has left in you and your family’s life but you can be sure he’ll be watching over all of you from above. He’ll be no doubt be engaging in some doubles with all the other tennis greats that have gone before him! May he rest in peace.
