I always loved having a chat with Shay when I passed the house and always left with a smile on my face, he was so funny and obviously very proud of the life you had together. I will be thinking of him and Conor in the coming weeks.

It takes a village to raise a child and I was very lucky to have Shay as part of mine. He penned my first, and arguably best, nickname "Derv-illa the Gorilla" which he exclusively used.

He taught me to ride my bike without stabilisers, patiently running along Burrow Court holding onto my bike saddle until he felt I was ready. When I realised he wasn't holding on anymore, I promptly fell off. But in true Shay fashion, he let out a belly laugh and encouraged me back up on the horse again. 

He would call into our house every Wednesday evening to collect Dad for pints with the lads at the Country Club. The pair of them would crack the same jokes and head off like school boys being let loose.

As a teenager and into adulthood, he'd always stop for a friendly chat over the wall. He was never in a rush, always in good humour and genuinely interested.

I will always hold fond memories of Shay and am very grateful for them.

So sad to learn of Shay’s passing. A genuinely nice man who I shall always remember with a warm smile on his face and his hand outstretched in greeting.
I hope the sadness we all feel today will soon give way to a treasure trove of lovely memories.
Rita, Lynn and Alan, you must be immensely proud of Shay and also of yourselves for the wonderful care you’ve given him, especially over recent years.
