Sr. Angela Powell

Sr.Angela was exceptionally capable as a teacher, a principal and a great leader.
Whether it was teaching or sports facilities she worked tirelessly and it often seemed effortlessly to have the best at Loreto, Fermoy.
During her tenure as principal, Sr. Angela encouraged teachers to pilot new teaching and learning programmes for the Dept., of Education, bringing new learning opportunities for students and funding for enhanced facilities which she advocated for. Always progressive, later as property officer for the Loreto Order she continued to secure funds to upgrade facilities in the school.
A talented marine biologist and sportsperson, Sr. Angela was both a conversationalist and a listener with a great sense of humour.
On behalf of myself and my sisters Eliz, Ellen and Nicola who were pupils of Sr. Angela in Loreto, Fermoy we offer our condolences to Sr. Angela's family and her Loreto Community. May Sr. Angela rest in peace.

Sr Angela was truly an inspiration to me. The Board of Management of Loreto Secondary School Fermoy wish to extend its condolences to Sr. Angela’s family, friends and her Loreto community on her sad passing. Sr. Martin/Angela had a special relationship with this school, from her time as pupil, young Sister, science teacher and Principal (1989 to 1999). Following her retirement as Principal, she was involved with the school as Property Officer for Loreto and her expertise in this field was highly valued. As a teacher and Principal, she was committed to providing an excellent education to Loreto girls, both academically and holistically, preparing them for life as compassionate, empathetic, forward looking young women. Her contribution can be seen from the many tributes shown on this page from former pupils and colleagues. A special memorial mass will be held for her in Fermoy at the end of April. With deep affection and recollection I remember meeting Angels for the first time when we sat for our Leaving Certificate in St Aloysius School, Cork. I was enthralled with the character she was then, and always was. We kept in touch all these years, and the last time we met in Dublin was before the covid pandemic took hold.

My earliest memories of her was in junior infants where I remember her as such a kind nun. Kindness to a 4 year old is never forgotten. Were were truly a blessed generation whose lives were shaped by a dedicated and caring group of sisters. May Sr. Angela now receive her just reward. Eternal rest grant unto her.

She was fair but firm and I was privileged to have her as my principal. I wonder did she put on “feet of a dancer” on our last day in leaving cert knowing we’d all be crying lol.
