Sr. Gerard Egan

Very happy memories of Sr Gerard when I did theatre course under her tutelage in the early 70s. She was a wonderful teacher, treated everyone with respect and had a smile that could light up an amphitheatre.

As a student nurse at The Mater Hospital, she was always so supportive and encouraging to me.
Sr. always greeted us with a lovely smile and made us feel relaxed as students. She is sadly missed.

So sad to hear this news. Sr Gerard was a phenomenal lady, I knew her from my short stint as a student nurse in theatre and also from the Mater Charity Shop. I was the volunteer wedding planner for a gentleman who was dying some years ago, they had no money, I brought his bride to be to the Mater Charity Shop and Sr Gerard was simply amazing. She organised the dress and flowers and cake for me, involving half the convent and making the day so special for my patient and his wife. She did all this with a huge heart and no drama. A life well led. RIP

Sr Gérard will always be fondly remembered by the numerous surgeons trained in the Mater theatres under her direction. She was very progressive and also played a major part in the setting up of the Cardiac Surgery Unit.

Ger was an amazing lady. I had the privilege of crossing paths with her in 2004 in the Mater hospital shop. Upon learning that I was heading to Nairobi to visit destitute children, herself & Mr Gallagher gave me two gigantic teddy bears to bring on my journey, which brought great joy to the children. I loved her 'do can' attitude. She was a great mentor to me and was the person who inspired me to open a charity shop in Carlow town for the children in Kenya, I will always remember her saying to me when I told her of my idea to open a shop, "just do it, get it open, everything will work out" and she was so right.

Wonderful memories of working with Sister Gerard at Mater theatres in the early 70s. Her kind and wise leadership was unprecedented. I do and shall remember her with great affection and respect. Condolences to the Mater Community and Sr Gerard’s family.
