Sr. Loreto (Evelyn) McLoughlin

Can I offer my sincere condolences to the extended McLoughlin and Mercy families on the death of Sr Loreto. I was a boarder in St Raphaels in the early 1970s. Sr Loreto and I both left Loughrea in 1974, she to Westport and I to Ballinasloe. We reconnected briefly in 2015 when Sr Loreto was kind enough to write to me. In September last year I again made contact with Sr Loreto and immediately I was invited to visit her. A fellow past pupil and I visited her in Stella Maria and we had a wonderful two hours in her company. She exuded something quite special, a contentment and a joie de vivre that was quite uplifting. We met her again briefly in December and we had great plans to have many more times with her but that is not to be. I am very grateful for the brief time we had in 2024; it has had a profound effect on me. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

I was so sad to learn that Sr. Loreto had passed away. She was a truly remarkable lady. Sr. Loreto was principal in St. Raphael's when I was a pupil there many moons ago. She was always kind and caring. I was fortunate to have met her several times down through the years in Loughrea and later in Stella Maria as well as at her book launches where she spoke so inspiringly. My sincere condolences to Sr. Loreto's family and especially to her community in Stella Maria on her sad passing. May she rest in eternal peace.

My sympathy to Evelyn’s family and her Mercy sisters. My sister and I arrived at St. Raphael’s as boarders from Dublin. It was my mother’s alma mater. Evelyn was principal and teacher. She was my stellar french teacher, we were fortunate to have many excellent teachers. Evelyn instilled a love of learning in us, objective thinking, reaching our potential, and being independent women. We kept in touch over the years, she was funny, kind, full of clarity, gave me lots of professional advice over the years. She accepted her diagnosis with faith and fortitude. My abiding memory of Sr. Loreto is her standing at a podium in a hotel in Galway a couple of years ago at the launch of one of her several books. There she stood, confident, smiling at her audience, her shoulders erect, beautifully dressed in a tailored jacket, a colourful scarf claiming space against the dark rainy afternoon outside. Her words fortified our spirits.

Above all, here was a woman, a nun no less, who was surely the fulfilment of the zeitgeist of the second wave of the early 1970s women’s movement - author, teacher, independent woman, sure-footed visionary. The girls in St Raphael’s whom Sr. Loreto taught in the 1970s had no idea of the future that lay ahead of us back then. But little did we know that we had in Sr. Loreto a lighthouse to guide us through the monumental changes that we had to navigate. I will never forget Sr. Loreto.

I recently reconnected with Loreto, having not seen her since I finished my leaving cert in St Raphael’s, many moons ago. It was a momentous meeting. I was accompanied by another past pupil from Raphael’s. When we left that day, we felt elated and very privileged to have had those precious two hours with her. We found her to be compelling, fun, warm and interesting. What struck us most though was the sense of contentment she exuded, together with her love for and delight with her family and friends. And somehow, in that short space of time, she made us feel that we were now part of that inner circle. Our utter sadness at her death caught us by surprise and for me is a mark of the intensity of her spirituality and her being. May you rest in the arms of angels, Loreto. I suspect they were eagerly awaiting you in heaven.

Sincere sympathies to Sr Loreto's family. She was a wonderful supporter of Salthill parish activities in Christ the King church, especially our day outs to Dublin on the train for musicals in Bord Gais. She also gave her time to teaching english to our Ukrainian friends. What a trooper, she will be sorely missed.
