Sr. Magdalen Sexton

My condolences to all of the Sexton family on the passing of beloved St. Magdalen. It is with great sadness that I learned of her passing.

We used to write for many years since she was my teacher in 3rd and 4th class. She left a lasting impact on me that will never leave.

In St. Magdalen’s class, I felt education was not only in the subjects, but in a way of being through who she was. She represented everything that was good.

Her classes were about learning from the moment the day started to the end. There wasn't an inch of wall without a poster of some sort. You couldn't have a moment of boredom staring at the walls, without it being filled with some Irish verb, map, poster of plants or other curiosity.

At the end of the year she would hold a prize-giving day. There was a prize for every child in the class. They would be laid out on her desk and she would call each child up to pick - from a table of wonder - a token of their achievement that year.

Every pupil mattered to her.

In her class you experienced fairness, equality, and compassion. She was the epitome of Christianity. She lived her faith and values in a way that made such a lifelong impression. She was a wonderful teacher. And more than that. She exemplified the best of what it is to be a person. I am sure she will live on in the hearts of her many students that loved her. She does in mine.

Thank you Sr. Magdalen for everything you have given to so many. May you rest in peace.

This very special lady came in to our lives and brought pure magic to everything she taught us. I owe my adoration of poetry to this beautiful lady, when Sr. Magdalene recited poetry, or a story , there was silence and awe in the classroom, I lived for those moments! Our thoughts and prayers to all the family. We have many fond memories of meeting Sr. Magdalen in Chicago, Clare, and Callen. She shared such wonderful stories about my grandma and her family. I will be forever grateful for those and all her prayers over the years.

So sad to hear of Sr Magdalen’s death. My deepest sympathy to Sr Clare and Sr Mercy and to the Sexton family. I know you and the Callan Community will miss her cheerful self. I have fond memories of you visiting the Bungalow here in Mallow for holidays and trying to light the fire.
