Sr. Mai Eivers

Sr Immaculae taught me Latin and Maths at Senior Level at the Mercy Convent Secondary School, Clifden, in the early 1960s. A UCG graduate, her life was one of total dedication both as a teacher and a Sr. of Mercy. I was fortunate to renew contact with Sr. Immaculae on my retirement and I enjoyed many happy moments with someone so caring and understanding. I often visited her at Stella Maria and enjoyed the cuppa and chat and the company of so many of the Sisters who made me feel so welcome. And on leaving Sr. Immaculae would always point towards the chapel to say a prayer and what a haven of peace and tranquillity. Sr. Immaculae was a unique and special person, and I felt privileged to be allowed say a final farewell. On the challenges of life she often commented ‘remember everything will pass.’ She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Dignity is the first word that comes to my mind when I think of Sr. Immaculae. She demanded high standards from her students, but she demanded the highest standards of all from herself. She prepared a generation of Leaving Cert students for careers in banking, the civil service, nursing and higher education, and gave her time freely for additional tutoring and career guidance. May she rest in eternal peace. Sincere condolences to her family and the Mercy community.

It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Sr Immaculae
She was a great teacher, strict, but fair, and her pupils has the utmost respect for her.
I was 1 of the 6 pupils that she taught for our leaving cert, and through her commitment and patience we got there.
She also played piano at our wedding which meant an awful lot to us, thanks for the memories

She was a wonderful teacher & organist & I have special memories of her playing the piano after study in Clifden Convent Boarding School in the 60s, so that we could enjoy a little dancing before bedtime. So very very sad to hear this news. What a teacher, what a LADY. I used to make her giggle when i performed in the wonderful operettas she so dedicately produced. Anyone remember "Dame Grumpus"?? Clifden Convent School. She used to blush bright red when she laughed. Deep down she was quite shy. What a loss to this old world she is but lucky HEAVEN. I'm in tears as i write this. God she had her hands full with all us scallywags. RIP Sr. Immaculae.

I am saddened to hear of Sr Immaculae's death. She was a remarkable woman, and a very good headmistress. She provided extra classes in a few honours subjects for a small group who needed the marks. In my case, I needed a few extra subjects to get the grant needed to go to University, and she quietly organised all the application forms. She knew I couldn't fill a form to save my life, and gave me that wry half smile all her pupils knew. 'Well, Miss, I suppose this is supposed to be filled in?'
Sr Immaculae taught me Latin and Irish, and I still remember a very lazy essay I turned in and her very annoyed response. The red marks were enough to make sure it never happened again. She expected your best, and she often got it.
She was austere in ways, and glided silently along the convent corridors. It was enough for her to materialise at a door to turn the bedlam created by thirty gym-slipped girls into the 'young ladies' so beloved of Mother Mary of the Sacred Heart.

I am glad that I was able to thank her for all she had done very belatedly, about five years ago when Sr Agnes drove her out to the house for lunch. She was that rare person, a great teacher, and a very interesting woman, who moved seamlessly from being Head of a school to the townships of South Africa.
I owe her a great deal and am sorry I cannot be at the funeral.

I was very saddened to hear of Sr Immaculae’s passing. When I first joined the staff at CCS she was gone to Peru for a year. For the next 5 years I worked side by side with Immaculae in the teaching of Maths. Her insight, respect and kindness to all her students was inspiring. As a young teacher I was so lucky to have a role model like Sr Immaculae. To her family and the Sisters of Mercy my deepest sympathy. A long life well lived. Rest in Peace Sr.
