Siater Martha was at Nth William St Orphanage when I went there in June 1950 when I was five, and the youngest there at the time. She left when I was ten in to go to Navan Rd. We kept in touch, and when I was in year six at Glasnevin (1068) we were at a production of Macbeth, she was sitting a few rows behind me, and I heard her call my name, when I looked around she said "come and see you're mother!" That's how she's been - a mother to me.

Later when I was training to be a nurse at Edegware General Hospital, and she was studying psychology (1972) we crossed paths again. and would relish our time together. I married and settled in Australia, but whenever I visited my sister helen in Dublin, we got together with her, either at Navan Road, or she'd visit us at Monkstown. My son loved her, as did my husband. Once when visiting Dublin (1982) and she was attending a conference where my sister Una was catering, and she heard I was in Dublin, and she phoned me. I asked 'how did you know i was home' 'oh! she said sure it was in the paper, everyone knows you're here'.......that was typically Martha!! She was a breath of fresh air, she was the human nun - there were few like her. When I as visiting my sister Rosaleen in California last month, we talked about Sister Martha and on googling her, we sent her a message, but didn't realise she was in her final days.

She gave us love, warmth and above all fairness in an otherwise unfair world. We remember her with love, and see her passing as the end of an era.

With much love, Collette Byrne, the youngest of the seven Byrne sisters.
May you rest in peace. Padraic Cawley ( Navan Road '82-'83
