My deepest sympathy to the Family of Mercy Arus Mhuire, Clonakilty, I know how loved and loving Mary Jo was to you all. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. I having the privilege of meeting her once and that was quite recently, she left a lasting impression on me. Her warmth and gentleness remains with me. God rest her beautiful soul. Her spirit lives on with you and shall fill you with hope. We are with you in prayer as we had a sudden death Sr Marion RIP the same week. Let us pray for each other. I was so sorry to hear of Mary Jo’s death. I had been out of contact due to illness and was trying to get in touch again. She was a woman of great empathy and wisdom. She was serious about serious things like women’s place in the church; but that was balanced by a great sense of fun and ability to see the ridiculous side of life. Our missionaries in Nigeria found her a great source of strength. One man used to quote her as if her opinions were akin to ex cathedra pronouncements. May the Good Shepherd welcome her as one of His own.

I am very grateful to have known Mary Jo, and benefitted from her guidance and encouragement in my days working in Cork. In her quiet, gentle and unassuming way, with her wit and her smile, she brought light and hope to those most in need. May her gentle soul now enjoy eternal rest.

From my very first meeting with Mary Jo, 40 years ago, I was deeply inspired and warmed by the depth of her faith in others, and in her God. Mary Jo had an understanding of, and compassion for the entire prism of human emotion. My life was irrevocably changed and enriched from my all too infrequent encounters with her in various stages of my spiritual journey. May you rest now eternally in the peace that surpasses all understanding Mary Jo. You will be missed hugely.

Mary Jo and I go back to Coláiste Muire Dungarvan. Since then she has been a great friend, mentor and go to person for all kinds of advice. Always warm and sincere. We shared a love of snowdrops. I will miss her but know that she has found the peace that surpasses all.

Her kindness and inspiring nature have left a lasting mark on me ever since and I am sure that there are many more who were equally positively impacted by her goodness.

Any meeting, however brief, with Sr Mary Jo was always a joy. May she now sleep peacefully in the arms of God.

Sister Mary Jo was the kindest most loving, unjudgmental person you could meet. Such a lady and had time for everyone and a profound understanding of contemporary challenges particularly in the context of the younger generations. She had great wit and emotional depth and intelligence, excellent company. Such was an enthralling teller of stories, especially of her decade in Africa working with several different communities and her childhood and times spent in her beloved Arundel Mill, Ring. She had a respect for all God’s creatures and animals were drawn to her warmth. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. The world will not be the same without her. Heaven has gained a true Angel. 🥀
