My deepest sympathy to Mary’s family, her close friends and the Loreto Community on the loss of such a gifted, wise, kind and inspirational educator and leader. I had the privilege of getting to know Mary during my years working in the Education Office and enjoyed her good company, her exceptional intellect and sharp wit at our many Chairpersons' conferences and meetings. For me, she exemplified all that is joyful in Loreto education and lived out of a deep, spiritual devotion to Mary Ward's values and charism. Her integrity, empathy and loyalty were defining of her fine character. Mary's legacy is profound and indelibly carved in all the Loreto school communities. I will remember her with great fondness and admiration. May her beautiful, gentle soul rest in eternal peace.

Mary joined our St Vincent de Paul group in Rialto and in her time with us she was a dedicated "vincentian" who enjoyed visiting the families seeking assistance, and she always brought her gentle, wise counsel with her when talking to the young mothers about their children's education which she constantly promoted - we were so lucky to have had for a while until her duties at Loreto needed her full time attention. may she rest in peace - st rita's conference rialto

Deepest sympathy to Mary's beloved family, her much loved Loreto sisters and to her wide circle of friends on the loss of a truly gifted woman. Mary's energy, her integrity, her leadership, her kindness and her in-depth knowledge of the Irish education system have had a remarkable impact not only on Loreto education but on the education landscape more generally. Mary's gifts were shared with grace and ease; she had the very rare capacity to be authoritative and humble at the same time. I am so saddened at Mary's passing - I always think of her as having so much yet to live - but I am so grateful to have had the privilege to know her. Words can be limited at such a time of loss, but the words of the foundress of Loreto/CJ sisters, Mary Ward, sum up Mary O'Connor's life perfectly:
"Do good and do it well."
May Mary's gentle soul rest in peace.
