Sr. Mary O'Donoghue R.S.C.

I was very saddened to hear of Sr. Mary's passing. I live in the US and always visit her when I'm home, and was truly disappointed to find that she's no longer with us. I only found out this week as I was about to visit her.
Sr. Brendan, as I knew her, was truly kind to me when I was a little girl. My mother died when I was 3 years of age, and my father was in the US. Sr. Brendan was like a mom to me when I was in Mountjoy St. I talk about her often, and remember her kindness to me on numerous occasions. She went above and beyond. She will always be in my heart.

Heartfelt condolences to all Sr. Brendan's family and friends on her passing. I was shocked and saddened to learn of this news. I worked with Sr. Brendan in St Margaret's Center Donnybrook. She was a truly remarkable lady and friend.

She loved heading out on her "High Nelly" through the streets of Dublin no matter what the weather.

She spoke so fondly of her family, her native Tipperary and the hurling.

I remember doing a cake icing course in Kevin St college after work in the evenings. We had our end of year showcase where you could invite family and friends. My family were in Co. Monaghan, so it was a bit too far to travel. On the evening, Sr. Brendan and Sr Aloysuis were there by my side. I was so moved by their kindness. I've lovely photos of the three of us on that evening. I'll cherish these memories for the rest of my days.

Heaven has gained a beautiful angel. May Sr. Brendan rest in peace and be reunited with her loved ones who's gone before her.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Sr. Mary’s (Sr. Brendan, as I knew her) passing. We first worked together in St. Mary’s School for the Blind in 1978 and stayed in contact ever since. I only spoke to her on the phone recently, and I will treasure that memory. She was a cherished friend to me, and I will miss her dearly. I will carry her in my thoughts always. May she rest in peace.

I treasure the many memories I have of Sr Mary, from her holding my hand as she walked me across to school on that first day in St Mary’s, to my visits to her in Walkinstown many years later. It was an honour and privilege to have been in her care and later, as an adult, to know the wonderful, funny, kind and loving lady she was. RIP Sr Mary forever in my heart. Sr Brendan (as I knew her) was an integral part of my formative years in Merrion.
She was a wonderful, caring role model who taught me the most important life skills of care, and compassion which she displayed in abundance. She always reached further to those most in need and in doing so brought me, and others, with her to help her in that task. I like to think that the qualities she showed me have served me well to this day.
During my five years spent in 'the little ones' we talked lots about Tipperary and a good game of hurling that might have happened while I was at home and she was always able to take the sting out of the loneliness felt after heading back to Merrion after the holidays.
Her final words to me a few weeks ago when I had the privilege to visit her in Beechlawn were, 'we have lovely memories haven't we Edel' and yes, those memories of my early childhood will stay with me forever.
Sr. Brendan played a huge part in shaping my future.
I was so sorry not to be in Donnybrook today but what a beautiful tribute it was. Thank you.

So sad to hear that Sr. Mary has passed away. Our deepest sympathies to her sister Sr. Kathleen, her nieces and nephews and all the extended O' Donoghue family and all the staff in Beechlawn Nursing Home.

Sr. Mary became great friends with my Mam (Kathleen Stynes) at the Daycare Centre in Walkinstown. She was very kind and had a great sense of fun. I remember calling to her in the convent and she would put her Tipperary jersey on. We kept in touch after my Mam passed away. May she have the best bed in heaven. I will miss our chats.

I never write tributes. However, this legend deserves one.

A bright beacon left the world this week. St. Brendan — Sr. B, as she was always known to me — has been part of my life for over 50 years. I had the joy of working with her in Merrion, where she greeted every child with warm hugs and treated them all with equal love

Her faith knew no bounds. Her love knew no bounds. It was steady, contagious, and freely shared — whether asked for or not. Sr. B was a light in every room and a true servant of love.

One of the many things I admired in her was how she called it as she saw it — always honest, never with malice. Her truth came from a place of love.
She will be deeply missed by her beloved niece Kathleen and family, who helped keep her grounded. “They taught me to understand the modern world,” she’d often say.


My sympathies to her sisters in religious life especially her sister Sr Kathleen.
My sympathies also go to Caroline D. and the whole Merrion family she spoke of so fondly. There are too many to name — but you know who you are. She loved you all.

Her last words to me were, “We had fun together, didn’t we?”

A reminder to enjoy life fully — and hug someone today.

I see her now in her white dress and flying veil, going into the arms of her Maker. He has kept a place for her — one she called “the best of homes.”

She will be missed, but never forgotten.
