Sincere sympathy to Sr Maura's family, and to the Presentation Sisters, particularly her community in Bandon. Sr Maura taught me history when I was a first year pupil. She was a knowledgeable and dedicated teacher, and I have vivid memories of her classes.

When I started teaching in Loreto Secondary School in Navan, I was excited to discover that one of my colleagues, a fellow Corkonian, was the author of my first year history textbook. It immediately brought me back to my classes with Sr Maura. I have also mentioned her to my own pupils many times over the years, when telling them about our school trip in June 1990. I accidentally found myself alone in an underground station in Berlin shortly before midnight, with a 30-minute wait for the next train, and, in a pre-mobile era, no means of contacting anyone. Two teachers waited for me at the next station, while the other teachers and pupils returned to the youth hostel, worried and upset. It was Sr Maura's turn to have the night off, but upon learning of what had happened, she kindly got out of bed to help comfort them. I arrived back at the hostel and was so touched to find her, the two other teachers, and all the pupils on their knees saying the rosary for my safe return! I have thought of dear Sr Maura fondly many times since then, and have also had the pleasure of meeting her occasionally in recent years.

May God reward Sr Maura for her life's work, and may her gentle soul rest in eternal peace and happiness.
