Sincere condolences to Catherine, Una and all the Connaughton family. I was sad to hear about Stephen’s death. I have very fond memories of Stephen from our time in Dunshaughlin Macra na Feirme. He was a kind, funny, creative, enthusiastic and cheerful person. A very special man who will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

My thoughts when I heard this sad news this morning. Yes, it’s wordy as I always was in class.

Stephen was probably one of the best teachers (if not the best in terms of timing in my early formative learning years) I’ve had the good fortune of having.
His approachable nature made asking questions and sometimes even challenging him essential to a squirrelly inquisitive kid like me.
I know I was one of the kids who probably tried his patience, especially when our classroom was in “The Old Hall”. I can still hear him saying to a few of us when we were “exploring” the derelict part (come to think of it, it was entirely derelict!): “I know you’re in there Marie Reilly, I can hear your laugh…”
But we waited and were never “caught”, but he knew as a wise person did. Next day, no mention of our shenanigans, probably the best way to not feed the mischief of us squirrels. Critical thinking in practice for all of us.

Plus his love of history was a kindred one, and he supplemented my healthy portions I also had at home. Both places made it come alive for me..

While Stephen is definitely a loss to this world, he left a legacy in all of us he taught.
Thank you for being an awesome teacher to us all!

May he rest, and suffer no more.

I remember Stephen in Rowlagh back in the day. He was such fun and always so positive. He was chief editor of the school magazine....What a storyteller. Stephen entertained all of us teachers and children alike.
