I am so sorry that we have lost Stephen. A friend and joyful companion.
I was so sorry to hear about Stephens untimely death. I remember him as a kind and gentle man in the Geography Dept, Trinity many years ago, may he rest in peace
My deepest sympathies to the Dowds family on Stephen's untimely passing. While we were both Glasnevin-ites, living on opposite ends of Cremore, I got to know Stephen way back in the 1970's, when we were both in Trinity (BA Geography) and in UCD (MRUP Planning), as he was just one year behind me in both. We later worked together in Kildare County Council Planning Department in the 1990's, and later on in An Bord Pleanala in the early 2000's. I also served with him on the Council of the Irish Planning Institute, where he was Hon Secretary while I was its President in 2000-2001. You couldn't have hoped for a more decent workmate and colleague, full of humour and with a strong commitment to the public good. He will be sorely missed by all who came in contact with him.

Listening to the tributes at Stephen’s funeral today evoked powerful memories when I was acquainted with Stephen until he was 7 years old.
I have a vivid recollection of Stephen, his parents, Alec and Nora; his siblings and the frequent visits by cheerful Auntie Dorothy from Moynalty arriving in her Renault Dauphine. I recall Alec making the daily journeys on his bicycle to teach in Finglas until he acquired a 1950 Ford Anglia. I also enjoyed the pleasure and exhilaration of Camino Santiago de Compestala.
Very positive and pleasant memories of the entire family. May Stephen rest in peace. Suaimhneas sioraí dá anam.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Stephen on cave conservation related projects. Stephen was a man of principle and this was none more evident than in his love of caving and his voluntary work over many years with the Speleological Union of Ireland. Stephen contributed in no small part to caving principles and practices that help protect Irish caves today.
His warm kind nature, sharp intellect and bright smile will be my lasting memories.
