I was so sorry to hear of Stephen's untimely passing this week. I remember with fondness his steady leadership and the kindness, patience and unhurried generosity with which he shared his knowledge, particularly with others trying to navigate their way through the myriad social challenges of late 1980s Ireland. My deepest sympathy to his many friends, and in particular to his family and those who knew and loved him. Rest easy Stephen x
Such a shock to hear of Stephen’s passing. My condolences to all his family and friends. Stephen was the tourist guide for my trips to Prague, full of ideas and suggestions. He was the student union colleague and leader whose name will forever be associated with the incredible campaigns student unions led for abortion access. And he was the friendly face, always up for a chat at countless USI gatherings, regatherings and reunions over the years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Sincerely sympathy to you Linda and all your family on Stephen's untimely passing. May he rest in peace.
Joanne, we were very sorry to hear of Stephen's passing. Our sincere sympathy to you, Margaret and the girls, to Faith, Philip and Rachel and the extended Grogan family. We met Stephen on several occasions when we brought the mares down to Jarleth. He was a lovely, friendly man, God rest him. May his gentle soul rest in peace with Dad. Keeping you all in our prayers at this time. 🙏
Very sad and shocked to hear of Stephen's untimely passing. We first met through student politics in 1988 and was very grateful for his support, wisdom and humour right from those days when he was Education Officer and President of USI and then when he went on to the International Union of Students in Prague, the European Student Information Bureau in Vienna, the European Youth Forum in Brussels and back in Dublin and home to Mayo. Such good company to spend time with as someone who was so intelligent, decent, sharply observant and funny. He led social change including notably the now famous 'SPUC vs Grogan & others' case when Ireland was a very different place. I remember him and those involved being threated with all sorts including bankruptcy in taking significant personal risk to stand up for what was right and to help others without a voice. It was no surprise to see the same principles right throughout his work and life.
My condolences to all of the Grogan family, to Philip, Faith and Michael.

So sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Stephen and my condolences to his family. I knew Stephen as an exceptional leader, guiding a group of committed, diverse and unique student leaders to campaign on many critical issues at that time including a women's right to information and he did it in his own understated and effective manner. He was a good man.
May he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathy and condolences to Stephen's family. I'm very shocked and saddened to hear of his untimely passing. From the very first time I met him when he was SU President in what was then RTC Galway, onwards through his time as a USI Officer/President and subsequently, he was always a gentle, compassionate person who cared about people , our society and what was happening in the world. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
Deepest sympathy Margaret and family on the sudden death of Stephen RIP
So sad to hear this news - I have many happy memories of visiting Stephen in Prague and wokring with him at a European level - ESIB Board Meeting 22 or 23 in Heino Netherlands, where he was the IUS visitor before he took the leadership of ESIB. I had the pleasure a few years back of intorducing him to modern activsts who finally acheived the repeal - that he was was THE Grogan in SPUC(I think) vs. Grogan - he stood for what he beleived in - will be very much missed.
Condolences to Stephen’s family on your loss.
When we were students Stephen was always sharp and thoughtful, and he was a lot of fun to be around. He was an excellent leader because he didn’t have much of an ego and he listened to people. We were lucky to have him.

Sincere sympathies to Stephens family. Shocked and saddened to hear the sad news. Stephen always had a kind word and was full of chat about so many topics when I visited the centre for my work with the Probation Service. May he RIP
Stephen's contribution to the student movement, social justice and our country's progression into a more caring, empathetic and trusting society is known by all who worked with him. His sense of mischief never waivered. But he was also someone who knew when to show kindness that was instinctive to him. When I was a young, naive, and isolated first time mother, Stephen would call to offer company, and to babysit, when we were all too young to even know what parenting was. Strength, love and light to all of his family, work colleagues and his wide circle of friends.
Shocked and saddened to hear Stephen has gone. He made a great contribution to modernising Ireland and making it a more open, honest, and welcoming place. My condolences to the family and all who knew and loved him.
My sincere condolences to Stephen's family, loved ones and friends. One of the great student activists who changed Ireland forever, he was also humble, witty and a wonderful person to be around. R.I.P.

Linda, thinking of you and your family at this difficult time. May your brother Stephen rest in peace 🙏
It’s difficult trying to comprehend the sad news of the sudden death of one of my oldest and dearest friends. Love and thoughts to Faith, Philip, Mike, Stephen’s mum, sisters and all the Grogan family. I’ve known Stephen for nearly 40 years, from the times we soldiered together in student politics, through sharing a mad flat at Hanlon’s Corner and the hilarious political discussions that went into the early hours on hundreds of occasions. One of the cleverest and most strategic thinkers I’ve known, with a wicked devilish sense of humour, I’m just thinking here of the numerous times Stephen would get a kick out of winding up people who took themselves too seriously and then roar laughing at the reaction he generated afterwards. Stephen railed against injustice wherever he saw it, whether it was here in Ireland or internationally, one of the last pics he sent me was of himself and his beautiful son at a protest standing up for the people of Palestine. A true friend, considerate, kind and always generous, Stephen was like a brother to me and I’m going to miss him terribly. Adios Compadre. Marty Whelan
Deepest sympathy to Stephen's family and friends on his untimely death. He was a lovely character - honest and his own man even in his USI days.
Sincere sympathy to Margaret, Philip, Faith, Michael, Linda,Anna, Joanne, family extended family Remember Stephen and you all in my Mass and prayers.
