By any measure, Mrs Hoare was an amazing and inspirational teacher! We did all that you would expect under her tutelage and so much more besides: arts and crafts, nature studies (including field trips to a nearby farm) and end of week quizzes which fostered team work, encouraged peer teaching and developed a sense of fun in learning.

When it was cold or our concentration waned, she would get us out of our desks to do jumping jacks and when we had made our best efforts, we were rewarded with jelly beans, music or story time. Later, during the course of my own further studies, I discovered that many of these stories were in fact simplified versions of Celtic, Greek or Roman myths and legends which had inspired the great writers and poets of the past. I knew the plots and characters of Shakespeare’s most famous plays also: thanks to her reading of Charles and Mary Lamb’s ‘Tales From Shakespeare’.

She was ahead of her time too in her differentiated teaching and learning strategies and in her acute awareness and understanding of the impact of home environment on classroom learning. She had high standards (both for herself and for her pupils), clear boundaries, great wisdom and most of all, a kind and generous spirit. She was an educator extraordinaire.

Rest in peace, Mrs Hoare. I know that I am one of many who are indebted to you for the positive presence which you were in our formative years.

Brian, we were so sorry to hear the sad news about your Mam. Thinking of you, Annmarie and all the Hoare family at this sad time.

The importance of spelling and having a good foundation in grammar was instilled in me, and many others, by her. With a 'I will take no nonsense' approach coupled with warmth and kindness she taught me to love learning. It was a privilege to be in her class.
