Thomas Byrne

I was very saddened to learn of Tom's passing. Deepest condolences to his wife Anne, his children and grandchildren, sister Maura and brother Jack and all the extended family.
I worked in Wicklow town in the late sixties and early seventies. I got to know Tom and I valued his friendship very much. He had a very optimistic and calming view of life and a wonderful and infectious sense of humour. We had many memorable conversations and I loved hearing his hilarious stories about his time as a Radio Officer. He left a lasting impression on me

Two things about Tom. He was reliable as a rock and a great communicator. Whether it was an ability to produce a fag late on in the week back in our semi-penniless student days together at radio school in Kevin Street or later on, as colleagues in the IRCG, Tom always stepped up to the mark. When the proverbial hit the fan, it was so reassuring to know that Tom was on the case, not just for the reputation of the Coast Guard, but for the poor guy in the water. His work and good humour in cementing a positive bond between the Coast Guard and the frontline rescue people around our coast was immense.

My sincere condolences, I worked with Tom while he was a MRCC controller for the IRCG. A true gent with the warmest of personalities. I knew his voice for the many years taking calls from him to task our crew of R116 at Dublin Airport and met him over the years on our many landings in Wicklow.

His humour and laugh made us all feel good. May his voice always be in our ears and may he rest in peace.

Tom didn't just work on Valentia island but became an islander with the many friends he made here. Tom will be dearly missed by many but especially by his loving family. May God rest his gentle soul.
