Thomas Dooley

In the days following Tom’s death, we, his family, spent it hearing lovely stories about Dad and we cherish these.
Of particular fondness for us has been remembering the numerous days we spent on Astee beach with our O’Brien and Burke cousins. The exuberant card games with the Killoughteen Dooleys at Christmas time. The Listowel races followed by an obligatory pit-stop at The Devon Inn. Endless summers watching the weather for the right time to bring in the hay. The Saturday nights at the greyhound track in Limerick and mornings at the training track. If it involved a horse or a greyhound he was hooked.
He had great fun with his many friends and neighbours where every subject from the price of fodder, cattle, milk to the odds on the Derby was discussed and debated in jovial bouts of one-upmanship.
He loved to share his knowledge of Old Newcastle West, regaling us with stories and characters of the town, much of it learnt first-hand from working behind the bar with his Mother & his Aunt Catherine in their pub in South Quay.
We all knew Tom as a No-Fuss Man and he would be so embarrassed by us speaking about him as we are. He would be waving us away and quickly changing the subject. He was without vanity, had no interest in material things but loved the farm, listening to Lyric FM for hours, and spending time with his family and he especially dotted on his three gorgeous grandchildren.
We will miss him forever. See you soon, Tom.
