My condolences and love to the crazy Guiry family. I, first encountered Joy or Jo as we called her, at the age of 13 and thought she was mad. Little did I know, that I would then meet her parents and realise that crazy was normal in her family.
I spent many weekends in their various homes in Harrismith and Durban. I discovered that making Tom a flask of tea, was the precursor to some adventure that would involve some breaking of minor laws, either getting wet or muddy and having to push some vehicle that would not start.
When we finally made it home, he would then tell us something about some book or theory that he had read. He was a hugely intelligent man with a brilliant memory and ability to understand anything mechanical. If it wasn't for his undiagnosed dyslexia at school that left him with the belief that he was stupid, he would have probably been in charge of some nuclear physics programme.
And so he will live on in my memories, with that slightly skew smile , belly laughter if something amused him, asking for a cup of tea, telling us the most interesting stories and shaking his head when he thought we had done something mad.
RIP Tom and thanks for making my life more interesting by knowing you.

Dearest Aunty Maureen, Joyreena, Siobon, and your families,
I am thinking of you all today as you gather to honour Tom’s life. I am sorry that I cannot be present for the service online, but please know that I am holding you close in my thoughts.
Some people move through the world in a way that quietly enlarges it for those around them. Tom had that quality. There was a steadiness about him, a kindness, and an easy humour that made people feel welcome simply by being near him. When I think back to those early years in Harrismith, he stands in my memory as one of those warm and familiar presences who helped shape the small community that held us as we grew up.
A companionship such as the one you and Tom shared, Aunty Maureen, becomes something deeper than time spent together. It becomes a life woven side by side through ordinary days, shared laughter, and countless small moments that build a lifetime. That kind of love does not disappear when one partner walks on — it continues in memory, in story, and in the lives that carry it forward.
Hearing of Tom’s passing has also gently returned me to the memory of my own father, reminding me how love and loss remain so closely intertwined.
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
With love,
Zane.
