Wednesday, Sept. 7th 1966 was the first time I met Tommy as we spent our first night in 'Spike' dormitory in St. Mel's College. Tommy had arrived in Mel's having travelled from Enfield, which at that time seemed to me to be on the other side of the world! We struck up a great friendship from the outset. By the following Monday, Tommy was already in business! Realising that there was a great opening for making a few shillings, Tommy sent out town for 24 penny bars of toffee- butterscotch and cough-no-more being the flavours of choice! A day-boy was given a half-crown to purchase these, earning a sixpence 'tip' for his trouble. An entrepreneur was born and for the next 5 years Tommy's desk in the study-hall became a hive of activity before study time with students queuing up to purchase the bars of toffee for two pence a bar! At the end of each day, Tommy was one shilling and sixpence better off! Woe betide anyone who didn't settle any debt owed within a day or two!
My sincere sympathy to Tommy's family whose ancestors played such a huge role in Ireland's fight for independence. Ar dheis Dé go raibh tú, Tommy!
