Thomas MOYLAN

My name is Bryan. That happens to be my dad’s name as well.

In the parlance of our times, Tom and my dad were besties. He was there when my parents married as dad's best man. Myself, I came along much (much) later, but from what I could garner from Tom's sporadic visits to our home, their friendship was a life-long and a long-life one.

Unfortunately, I barely recall any of their stories...but I do recall a new appreciation that "olds" once had a life before kids....Chucking snowballs at the tram conductors of Dublin city during a break in studies does stick out in my mind for some reason: Not that I was aghast that these men were around in "ye olden days” of trams and such. More that these fine upstanding models of the community were law breakers! “Thou shalt not chuck snowballs at tram conductors” – might not have made it into The Top 10, but nevertheless...

A few years ago, I dropped in to see Tom in Drumcondra, announcing myself on the door as Bryan Maguire.

”Of course you are. You’re the absolute spit of him” says Tom before ushering me in, regaling me with discussions of a philosophical nature. It was a lovely afternoon. But had I the chance again, I would ask him to tell me about skipping studies from their uni days and chucking snowballs at passing trams.

I worked in the Land Registry's mapping section from 1979 to 2018 , I had lots of contact with Mr Moylan when he was the deputy registrar and found him a really great professional gentleman who was always only too willing give me a little time , help and guidance with my work.
