232. That was the number of miles Tom drove one Sunday morning in 1976 through every parish in North Cork to find athletes for a County Track & Field final. And he did this a lot of Sundays. As one of those who benefitted from Tom's selfless dedication to the sport I want to send my condolences to Bob, Martin and Majella and the extended Burke family. A man of great kindness, enthusiasm and drive he was a titan for his time. Yet such was his modesty that I don't think any of us younger guys realized in the 1970s that 15-20 years earlier he had been a cyclist of international standing. A rare breed indeed. May he rest in peace.

A prospective busy Dublin teaching career prevented me pursuing my running in spite of Tom’s urging to continue challenging the renowned Fanahan McC. He took me, a neighbour’s son whom he had never met, to my last sports meeting when none of us had transport in those days - it was in Burnfort 1966 and I treasure the photo of my win there. We never met again but his generosity and enthusiasm remains firmly in my memory. To Bob and all the family I send my sincere condolences.
