Dear Anne,

I am saddened to hear about the death of Tom, whom I only had the pleasure of meeting a few times, many years ago. However, he left a strong impression as a solid, kind and generous man with a warm heart and a quick smile.

It is impossible to imagine the pain for you and your family at this sudden, devastating loss. I suppose, the only comfort to be found, is that he made his exit, without having to endure a slow, painful demise, and will remain as vivid and vital as ever, in the memory of all who knew him.

I want to let you know that you are in the forefront of my thoughts and wish to send you, my heartfelt sympathy, from a distance of years and miles away. Unfortunately I am not able to attend the funeral, but I will be thinking of you at noon tomorrow and wishing for you the strength to navigate the stormy waters, left in Toms wake.
