THOMAS (TOM) COTTER

Very sad to read that Tom has died. He was a gifted jazz authority, broadcaster and writer; as well as being a very sound, personable, generous man.

I am a life-long jazz fan since I was 9 years old and as a youngster I used to see him regularly at the video library in Bishopstown. We always looked forward to his 7-10am Sunday morning show from the mid 1980s into the 1990s on ERI and later Radio South; and his Friday night Hospital Radio show a few years later. Whenever I've heard 'Rockin' In Rhythm' since it always reminded me of him and his show.

He kindly gave me a mention on his show several times as well. He was always generous with his time and answered the many questions I bombarded him with. I was very grateful when lent me many records and gave me some issues of Jazz News and The Wire magazines.

When I presented a jazz radio show for Athlone Community Radio many years later, my biggest and only influence really as a broadcaster was Tom Cotter and his fine, relaxed, polished presentation. He was a very talented fellow who made huge contributions to the Cork and wider Irish jazz scene.
