This sad news has traveled far and made its way down here to me in Melbourne, Australia. I'm another primary school friend of Toms in this list from Scoil Mhuire, Ferrybank going way back to the 70's and early 80's. There weren't many of us and I seem to remember there was just 11 of us when we graduated in 1982.
I always remember Tom as our rock in the centre of the half back line on the local hurling team. We'd meet every Saturday at the Grotto from U10 onwards and we'd all pile into the back of Peadar Aherns old Datsun to head out to Passage or Butlerstown to do battle.
Years later maybe u16 when he was much stronger he hit my father with a sliotar from point blank range up at Mount Sion when he was standing directly behind the goal. I remember my dad going down like a sack of spuds and I thought he'd killed him but he was ok, just badly winded and he didn't make that mistake again !
I actually met Tom by chance for the first time in decades some years back in SuperMacs when I was home and we had a great chat catching up for a while
He was much too young...
I am so sad for his family and close friends
