Thomas (Tom) HUGHES

Tom was a founder member and the heart and soul of the hillwalking group. His loss is immense but his memory will sustain us. A beautiful, witty and generous person in life, may he rest in peace.

He was a natural teacher with a great way of explaining things. Always an encouraging word and a great mischievous sense of humour. He was in no small part why I pursued a career in science.

As time went on I had the pleasure of his company and many conversations at ASTI gatherings and Conventions . He was articulate , mischievous,and quick witted . His sense of humour and fun was infectious. He will be so missed by his family and his former colleagues in Terenure College . Tom was a lovely man who I had the pleasure to socialise with many times, particularly in Brady's. He was a great pal to my grandad Paddy, who spoke so fondly of him. We've always been very grateful to Tom for the kindness and patience he showed to my grandad. I especially remember how giving Tom was in conversation, always curious to hear what others had to say and ready to offer his own thoughtful outlook. I was lucky to have Tom as a teacher for 5 years in Terenure College. A really great teacher who always made science and physics easy to understand, interesting and fun. In recent years I enjoyed meeting him when out for a walk. Tom was always interested in how other people were keeping and was a teller of great stories. RIP Tom.

Losing Tom is hard.

From Comer and beyond, Tom and a bunch of us country kids set out to explore the smoke in the 70s. And we had great fun doing it. Tom was a phenomenon: reasonable but zany, logical but quirky, all at once. How he managed that I never fathomed, but it was gorgeous.
A tip of his finger to the bridge of his glasses and what followed was often enchanting.
Warm and generous too in every sense. A good friend and great company.

Gone Tom maybe, but forever close in memory ...
